the 100% directionless thread

Having slept only about 5 hours or so in the past couple days, it took me a little bit to realize the topic had suddenly changed...

Wait... you actually get sleep? Must be nice.

I have a chill job call volume wise. Our busiest unit averages four calls in 24 hours. A transport is 90-120 minute affair depending on the area so it’s not the slowest.

I’m going through a process with a job that is much busier. Like 11k calls between four stations but has a hospital in district so very short transports. I am not often bored where I currently am but I would be happy to run a few more calls. It’s also like 15k raise.

In the short term, it’s a no brainer. But in the long term I’m a little concerned about being that busy over a 20 year career.

Muse with me if you’ve been through something similar.

I think it really depends on the specific person. I know plenty of medics who have been working for 20 years while running 10 calls during a 12 hour shift who love it. I also know medics who run 1 call in a 24 hour shift who absolutely love it.

I went from that busy system of 10 calls in a 12 hour shift to maybe 1 or 2 calls in a 24 hour shift and I am not sure I could go back. I was lucky enough to get a significant pay raise going to the less busy system but I am pretty sure I would stay here even if I had to take a slight pay cut.

It’s not always about the pay or how busy the system is. There are a lot of other factors that go into it.

I've talked about it in Chat a little, but after a long time with struggling to lose weight... I finally decided to "cheat" and get a Semaglutide Rx. Went to a local Men's Health clinic, talked to the Doc, got the Rx, and picked up the vial last week. Mr BLS here gets to do a weekly dose of "stab a glass vial with a syringe and draw up 12.5 units, and inject it". (That's the least fun part by a wide margin....)

Well, today was my second dose. From when I took my first dose last week till today, the scale says I'm down 2.2 pounds, so that's definitely encouraging

I have a cousin who is using it for Type II and he has had diarrhea for two years. Watch out.

Well side effects wise, I'm more likely to need to start buying some Metamucil lol

In other news, our Aviation Group is changing to a new* Hangar, so I volunteered** to help them out. Got to hang out with some of our pilots in between moving and helping set up stuff at the new spot, get tto see a bit of how they operate, pretty neat to see (beyond the grunt work lol)

It's interesting. We have 2 pilots on each shift 24 hours, plus our Tender Driver... and we currently have 4 helicopters (all MD 520 NOTARs). We're supposed to get a new 5th one of those in as well (which will replace the oldest of the others) PLUS a brand new build, larger twin engine Bell 429.

The excess MD520 are mostly for maintenance issues, that way we can always have at least one or two helos flying regardless (We do one pilot during the day, 2 at night).

With the new helicopter, comes a new capability, Hoisting (currently we can sling load a patient out off a mountain or the ocean, and fly them dangling beneath the helo lol But there'll be a proper hoist to bring any patients into the bird itself now. We're still not set up to do proper air ambulance stuff (i.e. no Paramedics, Flight or other, in our Dept, still going to have to fly any rescued patients to a waiting ground ambulance.. but there is open talk of changing that....)

I may or may not have let it be known that I'm definitely interested in volunteering for the new Hoist Operator position (they said they'd probably begin recruiting/training guys for that early next year). They also openly told us we should volunteer as a Relief Tender Driver (I'd also def sign up for that)

*new to us. The Hangar itself is 1941 vintage lol. Supposedly it's temporary, and they are either going to tear down the existing hangar and build a brand new facility from the ground up, or just gut and completely remodel, and they'll move back in. As the Captain in charge today said, they have a 5 year lease for this "new" hangar... and we'll probably need every week of it...

**Volunteered, but it was still an overtime paid shift, so win-win haha

Nice move. Always good to put a face and name in with a unit you are interested in. I volunteered many an hour in my day and ended up getting in on some ground floors, and also creating a couple of positions. Hope you get to fly some day. Paid of course!

I’m at the ED at our level 1 trauma center with my kiddo. She took a field hockey ball to the face and has a big lac just above her eyebrow. Luckily, I was at the game in my take home chase truck and was able to bandage her up and get her to the hospital… but sitting in the waiting room blows.

I’m going to push for plastics to suture her face. And I’m building the coach a new first aid kit with actual supplies in it.

Ouch. Hope you don't/didn't have to wait too long. Glad she seems to be doing okay all considering.

So what happened to the kid who hit the ball..?

;)

Hope she heals well.

nothing. It was really just an accident and part of the game. The goalkeeper deflected a shot on goal and my kiddos face was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She’s looking okay. 19 stitches later.

And now she has a great Origin Story.

Has anyone else watched the body cam footage for Rhyker Earl? It’s hard to get through.

I'm just hoping my Pokes pull through today when they play Kansas State. Admittedly watching Oklahoma State University football contributes to my poor cardiac health, but I'm loyal and true to my alma mater 🤠🤠🤠
