I have a question if EMTs / Paramedics typically use the Earpieces.
I purchased one but not sure how out of place I would look wearing one.
Does your agency use them ?
Our tactical medics have them and often (but not always) wear them. Some of our Superintendents wear them since they're supposed to be monitoring the air all the time. There was talk of them being issued at one point to increase privacy, thankfully that died since I already have trouble blocking out distracting background noise and would be driven to distraction having that bloody thing in my ear all day.
We use them in the ER, but I've never used one on the ambulance. Most of the time in the ER though, I have it hanging out of my ear. It's a PITA trying to talk to patients and stuff with someone yakking in your ear.
I am New to the forums but i do have an opinion. I have used them on and off of a truck. I have used them mostly for special events like concerts and standbys. Been used alot with a stint of Tac. medic with our SRT team. I also used them when i rotated through some of our section 8 housing and down town district due to things coming across the radio that tend to set off unstable and agitated Pts. Most of the time though, i have to agree that they are overkill an do/might get in the way of Pt care. Hard to evaluate a Pt with something else in your ear or getting your attention. Like everything else, they have their place and time. AND when used properly, they are usually not even noticed unless someone is looking for them. Just my Opinion
One of our supes wears one. Some of our Special Events staff use them, no one that I know of wears them in the field. I'm the same way as others in this thread, I'd get way too distracted while trying to talk to a patient with radio traffic directly in my ear. We have so much volume and don't have MDTs so the radio is constantly going.
