Unfortunately we only have 8-hour shifts, with two 24-hour cars and one 10-hour car at my IFT job. As of now, I work 5 days in a row of 8-hour shifts, occasionally picking up a 6th day. Really wish we had 12-hour shifts...

I would love a system that allowed 24's; however, I can see how in a busy system, 24's would be less than ideal due to sleep/rest issues.

Hall hires at 20 now ;)

Sweet, but theres still the fact that I live about 4 1/2 to 5 hours away. Did it for the fire season (300 miles 5 1/2 hrs) waking up at 0200 to commute ain't fun.

I usually run for about 18-20 hours straight at my busy 24. Don't get me wrong its not ideal, but it really doesn't bother you in the sleep department until the end of the shift and you start hitting a wall, but by that time its time to go home.

Then you sleep most of the next day... not like it's really a day off. Not a whole one anyway.

That's true. But I find myself bored with 5 days off anyways. So half a day of sleep aint gonna hurt no one!

Bored with all this time off... so you pick up more shifts. The cycle continues!

If I have a rough first day, I typically can sleep in on the 2nd rather than be a zombie on a day off.

Not sure if this is my preferred shift or not because I just started it but I do nights, 3 13s, 1 day off, 3 13s and then 7 days off. It's 1900-0800. Seems alright so far but I'm in medic school right now so I don't really get to take advantage of that week off.

When I start work I'm hoping for 2 part times at night. Only PT until I go to P school. I'd like a year of experience to get my foot in the door for P school.

Our FT shifts are 12 hour shifts xxooxxxooxxooo for a two-week cycle. I kind of like it. I would rather a Berkeley, but we get every other weekend off, and three days at that. I like it. Kind of.

If we were a little slower (a lot slower), a 48-96 would totally rule...

Loved this shift (hours didn't matter, but works best with 12 hour days):
Work Thursday, Friday Saturday Off Sunday, Work Monday Tuesday Wednesday: then you are off for 7 days.
So work 3 off 1 work 3 off 7.
Get a free weeks vacation every 2nd week; no leave used.

I dont mind the 12 shift. Comes close to 40 hours, and have four days off. not bad.
