I've seen ambulance transports start as low as $300 plus treatment, to as high as $1200 plus treatment (and heard of considerably higher)

Average ALS call in these parts is $1100-1500.

BLS around $600.

One county, the emergency ground BLS rates are as follows:


Base: $671.75
Mileage: $15.50/mile or fraction thereof
Oxygen when administered: $76.00
Standby: $37.50 per 15 minutes after the first 15 minutes
Supplies: Up to $30

ALS is always handled in that county by the fire department, and they can charge additional fees as appropriate.

$75 is too much for potentially life saving treatment and transport?

Sounds like "nearly everyone" has lost a grip on reality.

At the end of the day: someone is paying for it. The only question is should it be the person taking the trip, or all of their neighbors?

Here isnt ~$500 for a BLS ride, ~$1000 for an ALS ride.

So while i know the hospital wants me to start an IV since he stubbed his toe, ill hold off and let the hospital do it. I try to keep my patient's bill as low as i possible can in a non emergent situation.

Here it's somewhat dependent on insurance carrier, but generally the horizontal taxi ride is around 4-500 dollars, and actual BLS ambulance run is at least 600, both plus mileage.

How much do you pay in taxes? I'm sure it's much higher than in the states.

Monterey County had the highest rates in CA, around $2200 for ALS. Not sure if it is still the highest.

Nothing is free, the patient might not be paying but that money is coming from somewhere.

I would love to know what rates people get charged here in South Africa.

We have 4 main services in the Western Cape.

Metro EMS (Government)
Netcare 911 (Private)
ER24 (Private)
Melomed (Private)

And obviously, lots of small private services, especially in other provinces.

I really do wonder what the private services charge people...

Bear in mind that this fee varies by province in Canada, e.g.

This source cites $344/ call in Edmonton.

Where it can get really interesting, is if you get transferred by air ambulance as an outpatient across provincial lines. Imagine what an air am trip from Whitehorse to Vancouver might end up costing. Not cheap.

I agree that this should be an insured health service.

Random question. For the services that charge for refusals or treat and release, what happens if a 3rd party calls 911 not the injured/sick? Are they still charged? I'd be pissed if my neighbor called 911 for me when I didn't ask for it then I get slammed with a bill.
