Hello! I've heard about some companies that will pay for your paramedic schooling and in return have you stay with them for a certain period of time afterwards. I figure it probably depends on the company/area, but is there a general/typical amount of time for that? If it matters, I'm in NY and the program is 2 semesters.

A lot of the ones I am familiar with (west coast) are a 3 year full time commitment to the company.

If I was an EMT and working in a 911ish system in the present timeline, I would not be paying for paramedic school. If you’re employer doesn’t and you remain interested in this career—find someone to pay you to go to school.

Got it I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

Alternatively, one may not want to be indentured to an employer for 2-3 years just to save the few thousand dollars that two semesters plus books typically costs at a community college.

Now, if you were working for a good department that not only paid all of the costs of your schooling PLUS a salary, that's a different story. Even then, it'd only be worth it if I were confident that I was going to be happy with that employer for the duration of the contract.

That also makes sense, thanks!

Yes, for sure you need to continue to be making your wage in school. Paramedic school is creeping up in price, most places here are charging over 10k. Grants and loans are available but many of our students struggle with eligibility.

Worst case you leave early and owe some money back, interest free usually. Beats loans.
