In 2009, technically 5 years ago at the age of 20, before I was even of legal drinking age, I received and "Operating While Impaired" charge. Which isn't a DUI, but might as well be if you're driving drunk. The breathalyzer result was over twice the legal limit in my state. I completed probation and since haven't received any alcohol related or violent crimes on my record. How much will this deter my chances at getting hired as an EMT? I live in Michigan and was thinking about seeking employment in the city of Detroit.

I don't know if I'm altered but it's only 2014 which means if you got that charge in 2010 it's been 4 years.

Just for a comparison for my company in CA it's at least 5-7 years after your charge before you be able to be hired.

Major typos, thanks for pointing that out! And thank you for your input!

This is a reoccurring thread question. You could try the search function for some standing advice.

However, you be much better suited to call some of the local ambulance providers in your area and to check with your local EMS office to acquire their standards for certification.

Good luck.

Are you from the Detroit area? In my experience Detroit was one of the harder gigs to land.

I don't know any privates in the metro Detroit area that would hire an EMT-Basic with a recent DUI history. If I were you I'd call around and ask.

It's often going to come down to the agency's insurance provider as well as state laws about how long it stays on your driving record. Some are shorter, most have moved to 7+ years, some it never goes away.

Like others have said the only good way to get the answer you're looking for is call around and see if you can't find your state's laws about it.

Star EMS in pontiac. You have a chance there. You just won't be driving. You will tech every call.

Do you have other preferential certification?

I have not yet heard of an EMT job that has had no applicants apply. My thoughts are, if you don't have something else to bring to the table and you have a rather questionable background, why would someone hire you over someone else with the same or slightly less questionable background?

Put bluntly:

What insurance does an employer have that you can make quality and critical decisions when needed to if you're willing to hop behind the wheel after drinking-all the while knowing that you're in the wrong?

Underage? Over the limit? Driving? I would say this will deter you a lot for as long as it is on your record.
