    Ever google a call?

Working in a town with one small newspaper, it is hard not to see news stories relating to some of the calls or be reading the paper and have a picture from an Obit. jump out at me. I've only googled 1 call though, to see if one of the patients lived. It was interesting to read the varing...

    Bob Page/ Multi Lead Medics

I've taken his 12 lead class - very good! I've actually taken it twice. Once a few years ago and then our Service brought him in and required everyone (Medics & EMTs) to go through the class.

    Side Career

I actually work full-time for the USFS as an Archaeologist (collateral duties wildland firefighting). I work part-time for our County 911 EMS service (paid). Have a great and understanding husband and 2 little kiddos at home.

    Look, its the ride along!

We have students cycling through our service during the spring and fall. Basically, we prefer students who show up on time, are wearing the proper attire, and are willing to learn. Be honest about your skill level. We are a very busy 911 service that covers most of our County. If a student is...

    Who wears glasses or contacts?

I wear gas permiable contacts. I've had them for over 20 yrs now. I have glasses for night time/early am. I've worn mine in the field for those 20 yrs (field being full-time job as archaeologist), on wildfires, working on a helicopter and also as an EMT. Working a 24 hr shift, I try to take...

Do you have any experience with homebirths? Midwives? Planned unassisted births?

ITA. I know many home birthing families. I know many midwives. I would NEVER assume with my EMT training & Doula training that I know more about birth than the midwives I know. The midwives I know have gone through, not only class room training, but thousands of hours of assisting births...

UK Boy Dies as Ambulance Crew Takes Tea Break

I didn't vote because I think it the situation depends on the particular service. I work for a service that does 24 hr shifts, runs 911 calls and transfers. We have 3 crews (usually) working and cover 2/3 - 3/4 of our county. We have mutual aid with another service that covers the rest of...

    EF4 Tornado

More thunderstorms went through yesterday and more are expected across our area for the next few days. Our service has asked for people to be on standby for deployment down to Joplin (we are about 150 miles away to the NE). A good friend's family lives there and are OK - but the only...

    too old for EMT?

Go for it. I was in my mid 30's when I originally did my EMT training in CO. Then when I moved to MO I let it lapse (marriage/kids) did my refresher when I was 43. I've been working for our County's 911 service for almost 2 yrs now. In our service, there are a few people (both Medics &...

    Scare Tactics?

I've had two female Medic instructors - both were excellent and did not do what yours is doing. They would tell stories but only if there was a point that emphasized what was going on in the class room. Neither one was harder or softer on the female students. They both also had many more years...

How close is your Trauma Center?

In town we have a Level III - but we cover the county so that could mean drive time anywhere from a couple minutes to 30. Level I trauma - drive time is about 1 hr 15min or 100 miles give or take. Same for Childrens - about 100 miles.

Where you taught when you can exceed the legal limits to your practice?

I find it very interesting that C-sections are the only surgery procedure that is mentioned in this situation. Why would a c/s be acceptable and not an appendectomy? C-sections are major abdominal surgery. I've had 2 - there is no way I would want an unqualified person cutting into me. I cannot...

Where you taught when you can exceed the legal limits to your practice?

It was stressed to us NOT to go beyond our training. Beyond what our state would allow. In CO I was an IV certified EMT, MO does not have that certification. There is no way I'm jeopardizing my License by placing an IV while working in MO. In CO we could not take a blood glucose w/o the IV...

    unconscious patients and stairs

Call for fire assist. Unconscious pt's we generally use a backboard. We have moved a pt downstairs on one with just the two of us (medic and myself) but they were smaller people and it was a straight/easy stairway. For anything else we call for fire assist.

    Ipod Touch 4g cases

I put a skin on mine and then got a clear hard plastic case from walmart. My skin is a hand x-ray (really more for the osteology part of my life - but it fits for the EMS side also). The case is OK - not an otterbox, by any means, but I've dropped it a few times and it has done well.

US Forest Service Scope of practice

Agree with what everyone has said. Depending on the fire season and your forest you could easily be sent out of state on fires. Make sure to check your red card, as Nil desperandum stated, that it has your current quals. What you feel comfortable going out as (or want to be dispatched as)...
