Offshore / Remote Paramedic, Gulf of Mexico

I'm looking to enter the offshore paramedic field in the Gulf of Mexico or other remote locations but am running into lack of offshore experience as an obstacle. I have been working EMS full time for 7 years, almost 3 as a paramedic, and another 5 years as a firefighter/emt. I'm NREMTP...

Faith / Is there a place for God in EMS?

When the Mormons come to my home and ask me if I have faith and religion, it really is none of their business, but they do have good intentions and it is a whole lot better question than them holding a gun at me and asking for my money. After they invite me to their church, I always smile and...

Faith / Is there a place for God in EMS?

I used to struggle with faith when I'd see people in pain, especially family members screaming over their dead loved one. It drove me to losing faith at one point in my career, but as I've grown older I see reason behind faith and pain. As some others have already said, I sometimes pray to Jesus...

    Would You Tell

LOL Rid, I was thinking the same thing.. I was just giving them the benefit of the dougt... I have NEVER heard of selective bsi either!

    Would You Tell

You just made the statement yourself that MRSA can get on gloves.. if you scratch your nose after touching an infected surface with gloves on... What professional under any circumstance scratches their nose with gloves on? Defeats the whole purpose of bsi. Absolutely clean and disinfect all...

Religion and the star of life.

Copied directly from Wikipedia: There are several different theories as to the origin and development of the rod of Asclepius, any or all of which may have contributed to its development. The symbol is named for an ancient Greek legend, although the legend could be older. Greek mythology...

Stupid, Stupid Concerns - Working EMS

I couldn't agree more! This is an excellent way to learn your area. Try new "shortcuts" when you go to the grocery store or out to dinner etc... always be vigilant at learning your area, utilize every opportunity during your time off in your personal vehicle. Major roads are primary, then learn...

    Would You Tell

Just tell me exactly how you identify MRSA in its incipient phase prior to it's first appearance as a small whitehead? How do I identify MRSA on a handrail that may infect me? How do I identify MRSA on myself before it makes its appearance as so I don't pass it on to a patient when I am being...

    Would You Tell

MRSA is a rising problem, on its way to being the next plague if we're not careful. MRSA is easily transmitted topically or through respiratory, so just because there are no exposed fluids doesn't mean a thing against BSI. I work 911 full-time and private transport part-time.. I don't know how...

    Long Transports

Talk the same things as you would with anyone else! When it gets too dry I usually hit the jump seat and do paperwork, checking on them periodically.

    First Job?

Patience is a virtue in this line of work, so by the time you get your NR cert you probably will have a month before you return to school, so with that said maybe talk to a private company now and see what they have to say. They may hire you, what's the worst thing that could happen right?? When...

    GPS on the Ambulance

GPS is a great asset that is just an added bonus to navigation. I feel it's important for the user to not rely on it as a crutch, as a map and personal knowledge of the area are key. Unfortunately not everyone is fortunate enough to know every corner in their coverage area, I live in my district...

    Ff Vs. Emt

True, when I went through rookie school myself and others were "forced" to go through basic, none of us were happy about that. After many years and 3 paid departments, its evident that in most fire districts sans a few in this country that the paid fire service alone isn't justification for...

Do you agree with this statement?

I agree with that.. maintain airway so they can breath to be able to supply oxygen to the body from any cardiac function.

    Ff Vs. Emt

Apples to oranges, no competition because FFs are FFs and EMTs are EMTs. I work full time for EMS, but I used to work full time for FD and was a FF/EMT. It's an excellent asset for the community to have FFs responding as EMTs, and only makes the FF more valuable and resourceful to the community...

    Diabetic Emergency Question

Administering glucose could kill 'em from the sounds of the scenerio.. check BGL. Don't admin anything oral when pt is unconcious, regardless of how small the object is. I'd say maintain airway, check BGL and seek ALS via on-scene or hospital.
