Idk if people hate EMS or Paramedics..

But if anything they're easily forgotten, lost in the shuffle behind Fire and Police.

Doesn't help when there's lots of ambulances run by FDs, and lots of those by Fire/EMT, Fire/Medics, who solely identify as Firefighters to the public first and foremost.

Combined with much better PR that Fire Departments put out vs ambulance services, civilians who's only regular encounter with EMS is seeing the occasional ambulance driving by don't think about EMS as a seperate service.
I really hate FF in HI.

So, actually...the point of this post was the OP was talking about wearing a vest “because EMS is hated...” and I thought that viewpoint was odd.

I’ve never seen actual “hatred”.

The only hatred I have every witnessed is when an EMT/Paramedic brags how much sleep they got to the ER staff.

As for the general public, I think we are viewed in a very positive way. I got offers to buy my lunch on a regular basis pre Covid. It will be interesting to see if the trend continues when the fast food places let you come inside to order.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t you in the Minneapolis area?

If so, I’d find your point of view extremely relevant to the thread topic in this day and age.

I gag every time someone suggests we should stop wearing Class B shirts because “EMS and fire get shot at when we look like cops.” Bro we work in a wealthy suburb, it’ll be ok.

Even if we didn’t work in the burbs, it would still be ok. These also seem to be the people that want to carry guns or otherwise think they hold some sort of “law enforcement-lite” role.

Yes I work in the suburbs and farther out.

Hennepin County EMS is changing the color of their uniforms due to safety concerns. From what I heard the medics are divided about this change. It is difficult to tell tell from the Hennepin County Deputies at a glance.

Just me, but I wouldn’t be terribly upset about changing those brown uniforms. Anyhow, carry on...

I've heard of local incidents as of late. "Mom would've gotten better care if she was white".

Isolated incidents, but as a whole.I don't think EMS is hated.

Those complaints are voiced in clinic and the hospital as well, so I don’t think that is isolated to EMS.

There’s an EMS squad in central Jersey and they have uniforms that straight up make them look like cops, complete with black pants and a dark blue stripe down the leg.

Mid 70's to about the mid 90's I think...Both used same name brand shirts and pants. Standard use of leather basket weave utility belts with large brass buckle was common among paramedics. In their defense, the portable motorola's were bricks. Very common for national media to refer to "police ambulances" when covering high profile MCI's.

Very much set up an adversarial vibe when responding to certain parts of town, but the cops and medics were very tight. Transitioned to a white shirt then went to a shield type badge until finally the fire dep't took over EMS. All in all, would be a non-starter today....

Lime green and purple. With a big *** feather in their hats.
Something to be said for green -- seems to work in the UK! (I like the idea of a distinctive uniform color for services...)

EMS isn't hated -- certainly liked more than PD. And of course, people are much more likely to call for medical emergencies than any other type of non-crime incident.

I simply mean it’s not uncommon where I am anyway that we get confused with the police. Patients on scenes have refused to talk to me thinking I was the police or in some occasions I have had parents tell their children don’t talk to him he will tell the po po. And on the rare occasion we have had stuff thrown at ambulances in my area.
