McCormick Ambulance Test

Hi, I'm completely new to EMS and I just got my EMT license in August.

I successfully completed an application to McCormick Ambulance Company in the Los Angeles Region, and they want me in for testing within five days.

My problem is I'm a puny 18 year old female, 116 Ibs. I just found out that there is a dummy drag test for a 180 pound dummy and I have no idea if I am capable of dragging it. If I fail my dummy drag will I not get the position?

I've been going to the gym. I can only leg press 250 (possibly more), but my chest press is not at all impressive.

I feel so under prepared for this test. I wasn't expecting a call from HR until probably a month later. Any advice?

Yes, if you can't pass the lift test you won't be hired. Lifting and moving patients is a HUGE part of our job, and since we currently only have manual gurneys you have to be able to lift a patient on there.

Best advice I have is obviously keep working out, legs, chest, arms, cardio, all that good stuff will help in all sorts of ways. Otherwise look into specific lifting techniques so you don't end up hurting your back or anything.

If you do end up failing the lift test or otherwise simply feel you are too unready to continue on, talk with Lucas, I'm sure you can work something out and test again in a month or so, we (should) have plenty of upcoming classes since we've added a bunch of new shifts within the last few weeks to handle new contracts. If you know your EMT stuff and can map with the Thomas Guide (w/ no GPS) and just need to work on physical fitness I'm sure management will be happy to talk to you when you're feeling stronger.

Hey Jim, I just got the email today that I'll be moving forward in the process with McCormick. I was hoping that you could provide some guidance as where to focus my studies for the EMT written test portion. It'd be much appreciated. And if I get hired I'll owe you a shift switch or something of that nature. Thanks

Unless it's changed (I took it a year and a half ago in Dec '15) it was all basic NR stuff, nothing too crazy.
