Hey all. I might be getting fired over something that happened at my AMB job. If it's not care related do you think it will hurt my chances of getting hired as a medic in the future. I'm really heart broken over all of this.

It will probably hurt reguardless of what it was for. Some things may not hurt as much as others will

yes it will hurt, no, it will not kill your career, especially if your good at what you do and have good references from people who worked with you at your previous employers

It will depend on what you got fired for.

What will hurt: Felonies. Patient abuse, misuse, fraud, etc...

Now the question would be as to why you were fired, and did you learn something. The second part is more important. We all make mistakes. Own it. Learn from it. Move on with a decision to do and be better than you were before.

What will 100% hurt: crashing an ambulance. Theft. Abuse (drugs, sexual, patient).

What will PROBABLY hurt: anything else.

EMS is a small business and even if your old employer won't say anything other than, "yes, he worked here", there's a very good chance that someone at the prospective employer knows somebody at your old job who's just a text/FB message away.

This. It hurt me early in my career, but I spent time working in alternate settings and learning and bettering myself and it hasn't held me back at all anymore

As the others have said, it all depends on why you were fired. I can give you two perspectives....
1. As an employee, I have been fired several times! :) I seem to piss people off because I speak up and I try to implement change. People do not like that and they will find ways to get rid of you if they want. Some of my firings were absolutely BS but what can you do?
What I learned...I thought my first termination was the end of me. I learned that many in EMS have been fired and for reasons far worse than mine. They all seemed to gain employment with everyone knowing about it. It essentially comes down to how you present it or spin it.

2. As an employer, I am only allowed to confirm your title, dates of employment and if you are eligible for rehire. Know that even with only those things being asked...many former employers overshare or convey messages with a tone or off the record chat. It happens and there is nothing you can do about it. Also know that most employers will google your name, check any social media and pry online as much as possible to get a feel for you. I do it.

Anyways, it is not the end of the world unless you did some of the unforgiveables and even with those, unfortunately a simple relocation will gain you a job again with a clean record.

Reefer?
