About 2 months ago I filled out an application to be a volunteer at my local first aid squad but have since to hear back from them. So about a 2 weeks ago I went down to another local squad and left an application. I have a clean record so is there any reason why I would not be accepted on a squad or could this generally just take awhile with the background check and all?

;) any input would be a help.
thanks

Have you asked them or did you sit around for 2 months and wait?

Christine,

Where are you located?

First thing to remember is that just as you want to be a volunteer, at many squads, the folks that handle new member applications are ALSO volunteers... and they also do that in addition to running EMS/FD calls.

I'd call the squads. Find out when Work/Drill Night is... go... meet the chief officers. Express your interest. Explain that you never heard back from your application.

Im in NJ.
I did initially go to there meeting night to hand my app to one of the chiefs and recently called but never got a call back.
thanks for your responses. just looking forward to volunteering my extra time and helping those that are in need. ;)

I had a similar problem. My initial application was misplaced, and after a few calls, I had to come to a new members' meeting and fill out another. A lot of squads, being run by volunteers, have problems with administrative issues.

Interestingly enough, I was later in the office, and found my own application. In the mailbox of the person who lost it. Sheesh.

If you PM me with where you're located, I might be able to provide some advice as to good squads in the area. Or if you happen to have applied to my squad, get you taken care of (but what are the chances of that!). :)

Christine,
it usually takes a month or so for everything to process (with monthly meetings and when the correct people actually get the correct forms). PM me which squad, if it's in central NJ, I might be able to help you out. if not, I might be able to point you in the right direction.

I am planning to volunteer as an EMT come june. Is there any way to better prepare myself, other then practice of MFR techniques?

Might help to be a little more specific, the role of different vollunteer departments differ. My department is mostly EMTs, but we only do first responder work. To the north of me their departments are also full vollunteer but they also do transport, ect.

Some departments take longer then others because of staffing issues, and others because their background requirements are so stringent. When I moved to NM and volunteered that background check took almost 6 months, and then I got my interview; come to find out my paperwork got confused with someone else because we had a similar last name. I did go down to the station often, and it still took a while. Sometimes this is just the way it is.

Don't get discouraged.
