Nice! This video on the average life of a firefighter in Tokyo is pretty fascinating.

Serious question: if you show up to shift, and the last crew member in your bunk forgot their charger, is it acceptable to use it while on shift? That's provided that A). it's compatible with your device, and B). you do the honest thing and leave it where it's at when you leave shift

Yes. Then again the military ingrained the motto "Gear adrift is a gift" into every veteran

Definitely pretty interesting! As many differences, there's still so many similarities to, but yeah, the intensity of their day is way more than ours lol How much is that played up for the video vice that's just the way Japan is, idk, one of these days I'd love to visit a station. Hoped to, but wasn't able to get around to it on this trip... next time!

Well, it wouldn't be the first time I've borrowed such a charger lol. I don't think most guys mind, so long as you leave it plugged in and don't abscond with it or anything like that.

Picked up 12hr overtime shift on the night leading into my regular shift today (we call it a Hold Under, the mirror of a hold over).

And proceeded to run as many calls as my last full 24hr shift in that half (and of course by the 3rd call at 0200, couldn't go back to sleep after), so now starting my regular full 24hrs with 5 calls already, muddling thru the morning checks and chores, like "Yup not on vacation anymore!"

Good thing we got coffee lol

I picked up a 12hr OT shift after my regular shift and slept in for three hours since it was at the same station.

Well it was all at my regular station, but we don't really sleep in here. Like Dispatch tones out every station at 0630, and sleeping in means you're in bed till 7 (which is when you're largely expected to have your bed cleared, even tho the next "hit time" is the 0730 wiping of thr truck before 0800 shift change. Kinda sucks there's no real sleeping in after a rough night here

We're allowed to sleep in as long as we leave a clock out note stating end of shift or we're working more than a 24 at the same station. When traveling we're not allowed to sleep in

Paid back the first of many trades for my wedding/honeymoon. So nice to work at a house that is not 31,000 square feet and only has six guys on the crew instead of 12. Oh yea, and getting to sleep a little too.

Isn't this the second one to do this in recent memory?
Yup. Actually this is the third....

The first one was a couple years ago, August 2022. That was the bad one, while they were unloading at the hospital, they believe there was a fault with the oxygen system. The Patient died and one of our Medics were burned pretty badly (but he's since recovered and is actually back at work)(and led to a number of policy changes, one of which now mandates we cannot keep our O2 bags in the cab of our Engines, just in case it decides to blow up one day...)

There was another one last June, apparently they left the engine running while inside the hospital, and that caught fire, this latest one seems to be a similar engine fire (at least based on the pics I've seen, haven't heard anything solid otherwise), they were at scene, and the ambulance burned up in the Pt's driveway... fortunately no one hurt (in these last two) and a second ambulance took the Pt no issues... but yeah, lets just say I'm glad I didn't have to write that incident report...

Another unit a week or so ago was hit in a head on crash while responding to a call (reports I saw say the other driver, instead of pulling over, veered over the double yellow lines...) once again minor damage, no injuries, but it def has not been a good time lately for the EMS fleet here...

They *did* just announce they're getting 17 brand new (well some brand new, a few remounts) ambulances to refurbish almost the entire fleet (we have 21 regularly staffed ambulance units). No idea if either unit was one of those new ones or not, I have seen at least one or two new ones out and about though. Hopefully that'll at least help with mechanical issues leading to engine fire... hopefully.

The mechanic says I need a new, well, reman engine for my pickup. Quoted $10+k 😵
And maybe in a "this should've been obvious at the start bruh", I mentioned my current engine is already a reman, and he's like "Oooh, hang on let's check another fault reason"
