Not having any job references

I have another huge question, I really only have 1 job reference and I start my EMT training as soon as we mail in my check. How often do Hospitals and or wherever most EMTs work check references.

sometimes... often... but it doesn't matter.

do you have any work history? if not, friends, teachers, classmates, they can be references.

HR checks references... sometimes... if you can't find 3 people to say good things about you, you need to find better friends.
 
Awesome I do have work history but it’s with a family business and I don’t know if that will cut. It?
 
I don't see how references known to be family members would count...unless they say bad things about you.
 
I think there is a high probability they'd check references.

I included my EMT instructor and college professor.

Probably not ideal, if it is a family member serving as a reference. An EMT instructor would be more appropriate, a college professor or high school teacher would work as well.

Sure. Is there someone that isn't part of your family that works in the business and can act as a reference?

Work extra hard in your training course so you can count on an instructor or two as a reference.
 
If you’ve only had one job and it’s working for the family business, you’re fine.

Let’s be realistic. If you only have one job on your employment history, you can’t have more than one reference.

EMT is entry level employment. It’s not like you’re applying for a senior leadership spot. It’s the equivalent of applying for a retail or fast food job.
 
Having no references is totally fine when you're starting out and if your only experience is with a family business it should be a-ok. I am an EMT-B and got hired with gold coast in socal (part of AMR) and the job app didn't require I write down any references, just a resume. I have had several jobs before I applied (none to do with EMS as I just completed my EMT program and NREMT a couple of months prior) but they truly did not care-- they want to know that you're qualified (which is evident based on your EMT cert and NREMT, ambulance drivers license etc), why you're passionate about EMS, how you would work well with others, and why you want to work for their service. They neither want nor have time to spend calling up your old bosses; just prove to be a friendly, flexible, thoughtful, and intelligent person in the interview (with the qualifications they ask for) and you will be just fine. Don't stress too much, as NomadMedic said above, this is simply an entry-level position and you're just trying to show your potential. Good luck, wishing you the best!
