Hello there,

I'm a fairly new EMT-B and a Paramedic student here in S.E. Michigan.I am also on the VFD in my little town. The ink on my EMT-B license is still wet, and yesterday I was both accepted on the FD AND hired by an ambulance company.

It has almost been like flipping a switch from one life to another. My medic class is 2 nights a week and I am working 2-3 14 hour shifts at the ambulance company. Then Mondays and in between drilling and runs for the VFD.

It took me 31 years to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I've done just about everything from Shoeing horses, repo'ing cars to parking and pushing out jumbo jets lol.

I'm loving all the insight and info I've found on the forum so far and I'm glad to be a member of the community.

Welcome to EMTLife!

I worked as an EMT-Basic in Michigan for a few years before moving. How is your medic class going?

It's just starting so not sure yet ;-)

What part of Mi were you in? I notice it says down south, what part? I'm hoping to end up back in Nashville when all is said and done.. (5 year plan)

Take care,

Hoofguy

I worked for a private service that served Detroit's suburbs. I'm now in North Carolina.

Welcome Hoofguy!

It's taken me 34 years to figure out my career plan and I'm just getting started in my EMT courses next month. But, I am in the Nashville area, so look me up if you find your way down here!

Plan? Career Plan? What is this plan thing of which you speak???
"If you want to hear God laugh, make a plan"

Hahaha! Too true! So it's taken me 34 years to figure out the next bend in the road then......

Well the way I look at it, you make plans and then adjust accordingly :P

I set goals and then I achieve them. Sometimes I have to take the long way around but I'll find a way there somehow.

I always told people I'd know when I found what I wanted to do, and until then I'll do what I have to do to get by. I've always been that way. Heck even dating, I dated quite a few girls and never thought I'd get married. As a matter of fact every time my family had a get together they swore I showed up with a different girl :beerchug: Then one day I met this flight attendant and 3 weeks later we were married. That was 10 years ago and we have 2 kids ;-)

Point is when I know, I KNOW B)

welcome to the life

Michigan is a great place to be right now. My beloved Flint is the 3rd most rapidly dying city in America, with Detroit already dead and somewhere around #9. EMS is great in such rotting areas. Welcome!

I have to agree with this. Working EMS in Detroit and the surrounding areas is awesome.

Welcome! I am a EMT-B starting Paramedic school in Midland. I have been on a volunteer fire/rescue department for about 3 years, and I absolutely love it. I am 39 years old and ready to take the giant step towards a career change from the building industry. My hat is off to everyone in emergency medicine, but especially the younger ones, as I never took anything seriously when I was younger, and would have got through any of the courses. Nobody can teach experience, and use your life experiences as an advantage.

Good luck and keep us posted.
