emt under 21?

This might not be the best place for this thread, but my girlfriend wants to go to school to be an emt. She said though, that alot of places wont hire emts under 21 because insurance issues and such. Is this true? I don't know where she heard it from, but I can see where it would sort of make sence...I was just reading of some states that will hire emts at 16 though. So maybe you need to be 21 to drive the ambulance? Could someone give me some answers please?

yes many places won't hire EMTs under 21. Some places will hire EMTs under 21 but they can't drive. Some places you get your EMT at 16. I don't know anyone who hires EMTs under 18.
 
A good option for the EMT under 21 is to work as a tech in the ER, because as stated in the post above, it is true that many companies won't hire EMTs under 21 due to insurance costs and liability.
 
So she still has a chance of getting hired as an emt under 21 (She's going 2 be 18 when she graduates emt school.) but she just wont be able to drive?
 
Possibly - it depends on the company. Have her talk to some local ambulance companies to see what their policy is. It may also be a good idea to get in touch with EMTs or paramedics in the area that are "in the know" about EMS in your area. I'd also recommend that she look into working in the hospital setting.

The private company I worked for hired EMTs that were 18+, and allowed them to drive. Other places won't hire under 21, and some under 23. Call around and find out.
 
I could call around to see what people do locally, but it almost seems pointeless because as soon as she graduates I think we'll be moving to another part of the country. Oh well, but from what you guys are saying, alot wont hire under 21, but some still do. So, there is still hope I guess. That's good enough for me, because for her it's either be an emt or join the peace corps. and I'm pretty sure I don't want it to be the latter. lol
 
Make some calls to agencies where you will be moving to. Most will be happy to supply the info you are looking for.

Should she decide on the peace corps, would you accompany her????
 
I work for 2 large urban 911 agencies.
Neither will hire you under the age of 23. Nor will they hire you with no experience. An EMT-B that cannot drive will find it very difficult to find emplyment. Thats one of the core functions of a basic.

My reccomendation is for her to either work in the hospital setting, or for a transfer company. Get some experience, and some age, and then move it on up.

FYI - To be eligible for the Peace Corps you need a college degree or solid skilled work experience. The vast majority of 18 year olds fresh out of high school are not going to be eligible.
 
well i guess we should just remove the search feature from the board, since no one seems to use it....

She can go to paramedic school and by the time she can drive, she will be working in the back.

Or...she chould call the other agencies and see if they will hire and let her drive under the age of 21.;)but ell her it is ok not to drive...it's no fun anyways.
 
Depends on where you are and what companies/volly services you have. In California, you can get an Ambulance Driver's License at 18....here in AZ, quite the different story. I've been laughed at more times than I can count when going to apply for EMT positions. If you want an alternative job, try a local ER. I'm getting in as a tech there, but only after working in the food department for 6 mo's. Good luck!

Well I live in NJ and am an EMT, got my certification at 19, so I am below 21. I can drive as well because I took the CEVO class. So I can do it all and am under 21.
 
I'm in PA.

At 16, I got my EMT.
At 18, I got EVOC, and could drive
At 19, I got a job that let me drive an ambulance doing transfers.
At 22, I got a job working 911.

I've been employed full-time as an EMT, in some capacity, since I turned 18. I also volunteer regularly

Driving really depends on the company/operation. When I was in Louisiana after Katrina with my company, employees out of other states were surprised that my operation let me drive at 20... many bases required drivers to be 21.

i guess it depends on where you live, i am only 19 and i have been having trouble finding a job with a service, and unlike bigger citys our hospital is too small to utilize tech in the er icu or medsurg, i am looking at a service that requires a 50mile drive. and the option to got to medic school i have seen that most schools require a min, of a year experance to be accepted into the program, but look around, i used an intermeadate class to help give me a leg up and to delay some time, you also might want to look at a degree program to help you to pass time between hireing and school, it might just give you a leg up in the long run
