ASHI is fairly common in NJ and is used by both services I've been with for in-house certification.

I once asked a non-English-speaking patient's adult son if he could speak his mother's language. I only half realized what I was saying - I knew he could speak the language, but he was being uncooperative in translating.

NJ doesn't charge anything for the recert. If you're a member of a volunteer squad, the refresher is covered by the state training fund. I also get my CPR renewed for free by my squad.

MMiz is right. It's an exam that's only open to people who took a certain course. Sometimes these are set up for large classes or classes for specific EMS companies.

McCabe in Bayonne is hiring since they just took over the EMS contract for Jersey City.

For NJ, you need to have healthcare provider CPR certification before starting the course. If you join a volunteer squad, they will cover the cost of your training through the state EMS training fund. However, most squads will want a 1-2 year commitment from you.

Has anyone else noticed typos on the exam? I found quite a few, some of which made it difficult to figure out what was being asked.

I believe most EMR / First Responder courses now are mainly offered for specific groups that need the training (e.g. firefighters, police officers, and some college EMS squads). Unfortunately, there really isn't much you can do at your age with EMS. When you're 18, you can take the EMT course...

Sounds like both you and your partner could have benefited from more communication. You could have asked your partner if s/he was ready for you to start moving the chair. But your partner should probably also have realized not to rest his/her foot on it since you were going to be moving it...
