You know you are an EMT/Paramedic when...

You know you are an EMT/Paramedic when...even in the middle of the night, the scanner volume is down a bit, but you wake up as soon as your station is named (even before the tones are toned out).... A couple of times, as soon as I hear SQUAD ## from the scanner, I'm rolling out of bed...

EMT-B Class: Before, During, and After

I might add that after the class: If you're taking any State or National Registry Classes, take them as soon as you can. That way, all the "book" stuff you learned in class is still fresh in your head.

    Encountering a Missing Person

Previously (in California), if this "missing person" was an adult, the circumstances would be reported to the police, who in turn, would interview this person. If they are (1), an adult, (2) in full command of their faculties, and (3), not endangering themselves....the only thing that would...

Scariest thing that I have ever witnessed

Unfortunately in the time of relative anonymity of an online forum, others will take their time to say what they feel, rather then uplifting criticism. Again, unfortunately, this is the written language and readers can see criticism as that, or "bashing" the poster. Thank you for taking the...

How long is Paramedic school usually?

The one I'm applying for is 37 weeks long, one 8.5 hour day a week. According to the application package, there will also be some Sunday sessions scheduled during those 37 weeks, but did not mention how many other sessions outside of our weekly class. Clinical, labs, and field internship will...

    Skills Test Jitters

Our instructor used the class before the practicals to run through everything with the students and question/answer period and review. He also said everything would be set up that Saturday (8 hours allotted). Before he dismissed everyone that night, he told everyone to have a relaxing...

    Pre-Test/Personal Interview

The Paramedic program I am applying to get into has a pre-test and personal interview. I can understand a personal interview and what it may entail, but does anyone have any idea what the pre-test would consist of? I've googled a few things and have found anything from a personality assessment...

    Age limit for a medic?

Wow <wipes brow>, thought you were going to talk about an upper age limit  We have a guy with our volunteer service that just "retired" and he's 77. The question of his retirement is still up in the air, but he's enjoying some time off for the time being. He may be back in a bit to be...

    NREMT Basic Written Exam

You can take the written, then the practicals? Hmmm, I thought the only way you can get your ATT (Authorization to Test) was have all the course work and practicals out of the way.

    EMT-B certificate mill?

Had to go back and look at my syllabus, but we had thirty 4 hour classes and a one 8 hour day for a total of 128 hours. We went two days a week and had the 8 hour day on a Saturday.

How long of wait for results...

I already knew the results of practical tests before I sat for the NREMT. All work had to be complete before sitting for NREMT test. NREMT results were known off the web site within 6 hours of testing (I took a 10:30 testing slot, although I showed up early and started a little earlier than...

How did you begin your EMS career?

Started out as a "junior" with a first aid card with my local fire department. Enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman (13 year career) and got NREMT along the way. Volunteered where ever I could with my multiple duty stations. Now that I've moved back home (card expired long ago), I...

How much did becoming an EMT/medic cost you?

All fees picked up by the Volunteer Department that I work for: $750 for class (included books, background check, CPR) Testing fee for NREMT (reimbursed by department) Transportation to/from class in department vehicle. The only cost to me was my time/effort.

    Question about nremt.org

Up to the point I got my Authorization to Test letter from nremt.org, in the upper left corner where my name was remained blank. About four hours after the test, I checked and there was a registry number there. That was the only indication I got that I had passed, other than my card came in...

Do you have immediate family who do EMS?

Although myself and my wife were both Navy Hospital Corpsman (we met while in the Navy), she was more oriented to the in-patient population and I was into the field medicine.

Was it always a calling to you?

I can't say it's always been a calling. But, with several relatives in nursing and medicine, I would say that influenced me to a bit and when I enlisted in the military, I insisted on the medical field. I first tried the Air Force, but when it came down to sign in/swear in day, they couldn't...

    Favorite or Best Moment

Best moment - my first delivery. Awesome, just can't get over what God starts as two cells turns out to be this beautiful baby. Emergency/field medicine was the life for me. I would do it for free (wait, I am), but would be nice to do it for a living.
