Transferring Drugs from one Agency to Another

I'd start with your state boards. They can get your trained in responsibilities of being an OMD. And they can tell you what is involved in transferring drugs between agencies. Talk with the current OMD of the agency. Maybe you take over as OMD for that agency to finish out the year, so that the...

Used models to calculate number of volunteers for 24/365 ambulance

One two person crew on duty, 24/7/365 = 17,520 hours of labor per year. If a full time equivalent employee is 2,000 hours per year, you'd need at least nine full-time employees. Volunteers probably won't run that often, so change the estimate accordingly. For example, if a volunteer runs 12...

FNG... but am I too old?

As long as you don't mind always learning new stuff in this new career, you won't be too old. I entered EMS at 45. Still enjoying it. Mostly.

    Scheduling software?

Aladtec can be set for :00, :15, or :30 times. But once you go down to a finer level, you can't go back up higher. My volunteer agency used to use Alatec, now we're at eSchedule. Eschedule is less expensive, but the software is less capable and the interface is much clunkier.

    Outside EMS?

I collect coins and medals, still looking for my niche there. And I started to play the banjo for a creative outlet.

    63 car pile up!

My family lives about 10 miles from that bridge. It's a section of Interstate in a rural-ish section of the state between Newport News and Richmond. Would have been nasty gaining access, unless they went the wrong way down the Interstate, like they do for hurricane lane reversals. Traffic backup...

    Airway management survey

Done. Concern with your methodology: You need to ask how often these devices are being used. My agency is fairly slow, so my responses shouldn't be weighted the same as someone who runs a code or two a week.

    NREMT-P Expired

Virginia closed out new Intermediates about a year ago. Current Intermediates can recertify as long as they keep up with the CE. But if you miss that deadline by a day, bam! you're an Advanced.

    Nebraska Flood Response

I heard a story yesterday (on NPR possibly) discussing that since Nebraska is a flyover state, you won't see much on the national news about the devastating flooding in one of the county's most important agricultural states.

    What makes a bystander helpful/unhelpful?

Other than general scene awareness that you will develop with time, people hanging around a scene aren't a big deal. If they start filming, fine, whatever. We're in public, people can film whatever they want. Provide the best appropriate patient care. When you're able, move the patient to your...

Thinking about a return to EMS. Wanted to get some input.

I'm glad you've gotten over the alcohol. Keep it up. Easy questions: Are you still certified, or do you need to retake the course? What are your long-term career goals? Do you want to move up to Paramedic? Or transition to nursing, or somewhere else in the medical field? Does your family...

    Online EMS Training?

Check with your state's Office of EMS. Or Office of Fire Programs. Or whatever department oversees EMS (and Fire) in your state. They may offer some of the courses online.

    Internal Communication Website

Free is always good. Paid is possible, depending on the actual cost. Improving communications would be nice, so I'm guessing I could get some money from the coffers.

    No new funny things?

It's summer. Classes are about to start up, we're all getting some rest. Things will pick up a bit shortly.

    Internal Communication Website

After a period of time looking at Vairkko, we ended up using Aladtec. I'm not thrilled with the communication aspect of it between members. I'm now evaluating Slack.com. Does anyone have any experience with Slack?

    Paramedic Psychomotor Exam

I ended up passing on my final (6th) attempt. Stupid cardiology testing. Still have no idea at all what I did wrong in the cardiology stations. After retesting all skills on attempt #4 and passing all but dynamic cardiology (four scenarios on a monitor). Retested same day, am pretty sure they...

    Meal Allowance

Well, that went in an unexpected direction. Interesting, but unexpected.

    Meal Allowance

Good questions all. We provide coverage Monday through Thursday 6pm-6am, and then Friday nights 6pm until Monday 6am. The Saturday shift is our 24 hour shift, so I was thinking that would be the one to provide food. The on duty team stays at the station overnight. Teams are two to six people on...

    Meal Allowance

A few members of my all-volunteer agency have asked that we provide them a meal stipend every x number of shifts. I'm just wondering what other agencies have done. Flat rate per member, Flat rate per shift, etc... I'm leaning towards something like $X per person on a Saturday shift. Each team...

    Duty crews

How far in advance are shifts planned out? Does your squad have a minimum time commitment that members are expected to run each month? What is the penalty of not meeting that commitment? Are some shifts more difficult to staff than others (e.g. Saturday nights vs Tuesday evening)?
