Good afternoon everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knew if a revoked EMT license for failure to submit CE's will ever fall off of my record or background check? I am in medical school, will be applying for residency soon and would love to have it off my record but not sure if there is anything I can do or if it is permanent and will give me trouble when applying for my physician license. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I currently live in Michigan.

Thank you

Did you continue to practice while knowing your license had expired?

I worked in a hospital but not on the road. They wanted us to keep the license up but working way outside of our scope. The hospital filed a complaint but nothing came of it because the job description was outside the normal EMT scope of practice.

I don't have an answer, but I'd anonymously reach out to Michigan's DHHS and ask, and then reach out to an employment attorney in Michigan to evaluate your options.

I bet there is a process by which you can apply to reinstate your license.

Does it even show up on a background check?

Then it’s a no brainer, fix it.

I’d first reach out to DHHS to see what they say, and it would absolutely be worth your time to connect with an employment lawyer specializing in professional licensure issues.

Good luck!

Your second sentence. It’s permanently in the record. I’m betting there is a bit more to this.

so even tho they filed a complaint and I never heard anything about it , it will be permanently in my record? The hospital required keeping up the license but I was not working as an EMT, I was an ER specialist.

Like they required us to have ACLS and we did IV’s and Foley’s. Even though we were working outside the state scope of practice they can consider that practicing without a license? Even though they weren’t charging my services as an EMT. I’m just confused about the process. Not really sure what I should do so it doesn’t effect me getting a residency

I’m being as honest as I can with you, I’m paying over $200,000 for school I just want to make sure I’ll be able to get a residency. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If it was revoked for failure to submit ce I doubt it would be anything to worry about.

But call the department of health tomorrow and ask. My bet is you will be fine. But what do I know.

The license was revoked for failure to submit my CE credits not for the hospital situation
Just curious..

Did you submit renewal paperwork knowing you hadn’t completed your CE, then were audited?

or

Did you just not submit a renewal packet and your license was revoked for failure to renew?

I’m guessing it’s the former..

licenses don't get revoked for failing to submit CE... they simply expire when they expire, and you haven't met the requirements to recertify.

Typically, the only time you get "revoked" if the state investigates you for something, and determines you have committed a crime/offense/infraction that justifies your certification being revoked (and yes, falsifying your renewal paperwork could qualify if you didn't have the proper CE).

Something sounds kinda fishy with your story, but the best thing to do is to call the DHHS and ask what your options are, and they will be able to address your particular situation the best.

So you were basically an ED Tech? Even if they wanted you to have an EMT cert for that, you’re not necessarily practicing under it like a higher level license. What state is this?

I concur with DrParasite about your “expiration” rather than revocation. I was thinking the same thing about your wording before reading their post.

Who ran the background check - a 3rd party online entity? If so, those are cursory in nature. If something showed up on that then it was likely criminal in a county you’ve lived in and it happened in the last seven years.

FYI, any EMS certification/licensure “revocation” is permanently listed on a state’s website of their EMS authority. At least for the several I’ve ever seen. This is public record and in the FOIA domain. The kind of thing that doesn’t/can’t go away.
