Which private or non-profit EMS services do it right? Some priorities:
  • High hiring/employment standards
  • Progressive protocols
  • Involved medical director
  • Top of the line equipment
  • Generous compensation
  • Access to quality continuing education
  • Supports growth/advancement
Are there any out there?
Hatzolah volunteer ambulance service.
Based in Jewish communities around NYC.

I wonder how a homogenous organization can actually have high hiring/employment standards. It actually seems rather exclusive and borderline discriminatory hiring practices to me.

Has their oversight and training improved since this dated incident?

How does a volunteer status get that box checked?

And finally....if this EMS Service checks all the boxes, may I have a job and be welcomed with open arms? I am non-Jew. I am white, male however, so that does count for a lot in that service.

The sheer number of different public and private emergency response agencies in NYC is astounding.. I have no idea how any of it functions properly..

Part of what makes a service outstanding is the people and how they act (I feel anyway).

When I worked for a private service: I worked hard, was always nice to the hospitals, and ECF's (Nursing homes). Our dispatchers had them call for our assistance even when the had contracts with other companies because of how me and my partners acted and treated them.
That turns around and flows downhill from management and owners (good ones anyway).

NYC's EMS system is a huge mess. has been for decades.

And if you looked at the history of most Hatzolah EMS services, they were mostly started because of a failure of the local EMS system to adequately respond to calls, particularly for the local Jewish community. There is other political stuff involved, but that's the general history.

Last I knew there was also still volunteer fire departments within pockets of NYC..

When I need help, I want to be able to call 911 and have them handle the rest.. That's probably a bit more complicated there :)
