This might not seem helpful, but you already have everything you need to pass. There is no secret to taking the NREMT. Read your book. Find your weaknesses and fix them. Take the NREMT. Pass the NREMT.

One thing others have used and @NomadicMedic is a big supporter of using is JB Learning test prep. If he vouches for it, then it's quality. Other than that, all it takes is knowing your material and how to apply it.

Do I need to be above passing for each category in order to pass?

Would you want an EMT working on you that failed a section?
In all seriousness, NREMT is an entry level test for basic competence. If you can't pass it, you don't belong in the field.

True. However, most people I know at my station did not pass it on their first try either.

There is absolutely no secret. You either know the material and have the ability to demonstrate understating in a written test format, or you're deficient in one of those areas. Find out which it is and work on it.

There are several online test prep services that will train you how to take adaptive tests. They will also help you learn what you don't know if there's a knowledge deficiency. Jb learning, medic tests, and so on. Pick the one you like best, just make sure they offer adaptive test prep.

This is not my experience. I've directly worked with roughly about 100 people in EMS that I knew very closely. Let's say about 50 of them are paramedics. My experience is that about 3-5 of the 100 had trouble with the NREMT test, and about 20 out of 50 had trouble with the NRP test.

People that can't pass the NR have one of the three following problems.

1) They have a fundemental lack of base knowledge
2) They have test anxiety
3) They lack understanding of how to take an adaptive test.

If you don't know the material, I can't help. However, a legitimate test prep service that feels like the NREMT, for example: JB Learning, will help settle the anxiety and teach the rationale behind the question and answers that may appear on the CBT. Number 3 on my list is something that you need to understand and practice will help you learn to pick out the "more right" of the two answers and quickly eliminate the outliers. Learning how to filter the questions to remove the distractions and focus on the stem is vital to success. Practice will help.

This article is about the GRE, but the strategy is the same.
