As some of you know, I'm preparing to take the Basic class this summer. To make a long story short: I've been to the doc several times to get caught up on shots and all but one sticking point has remained: I never received a second MMR. My mom always told me that I had a bad reaction to it so I never got a second one. Comes time for me to get my physical for the class and the issue of the shot comes up. I went to get my pediatric shot record and found out that there's no documentation of me ever having an adverse reaction to the vaccine. Now, the school (well, actually I think it's the state) requires either proof of two MMRs or a positive titer. Since I supposedly had an adverse reaction they also needed documentation. Well, as I said, there is no initial documentation. Finally got my titer back. Level of antibodies for rubella to be considered immune is >9. I scored a 7. So, I got a letter from my doc stating she was concerned about giving me a second shot due to the possibility that I had a reaction. I called the program coordinator to see if this would do but I may not hear back from her until next week due to the Easter holiday. So, I'm in limbo.

Sorry for the long post. I guess I just needed to vent. Also wanted to see if anyone else has had trouble like this. Lord, I hope not!

Similar experience. When I applied for medic school, had to get all my shot records together. Theones I found were 40 years old and scattered across a two county area. Ended up getting titers for what I couldn't document. Couldn't document chickenpox ended up using a documented case of shingles to cover that one. :)

call your doc

or a doc if you don't have one. simple blood tests will give you all you need. Many people lose their shot records or never had them all the time.

If nothing else remember a note from a doctor makes you immune from most of society's rules.

Yes, remember that vaccinations are not mandatory. There are ways out of them!

Someone I went to school with had an issue with a reaction to one of the vaccines and never finished the series. Doctor's note got him out of the requirement.

I would have to agree. IMHO we as a society over vaccinate. I have refused to get the majority of the vaccines that various EMS employeers "required". I've done a lot of research on vaccines and am very cautious with what I get or would force any children I may have to get. Certain ones are advised, while others are "feel good" measures that can ofter have a lot of long term sideaffects that, some of which are known, some of which aren;t known until years down the line after numerous people fall ill.

In your case how mandatory are they? Vaccine reactions are nothing to sneeze at (no pun intended). On the other hand, we are not just talking about your health, but the health of patients that you might infect with somehtin that you could have be vacinated against. It's an interesting question of who has the right to dictate your health care choices.

The doc called today and basically told me that the person she spoke to at the CDC advised against it. However, she's not my main doctor so she is going to talk to him (the main doc) on Monday when he gets back from vacay. They will go from there. I'm hoping that the letter I got from the lady doc on Thursday will do. Again, just waiting to hear from the program coordinator and they were out today for Good Friday. I just want this resolved. I'm ready to actually get registered for class!

Just claim religious reasons and you are all set!

Most will accept a letter of refusal stating you know and are well informed of the risks. That for health and personal reasons you refuse to participate. Usually this is sufficient enough.

If all fails, do like reaper described...

C'mon. Don't you want to experience anaphylaxis?

I'd always try not to risk an adverse reaction!!

Apparently dying = bad. Really misses up your career
