Do they remove you from EMT training?

Huh? Are you mute?

Only when I don't feel like talking

Ok then

You will have a hard time functioning in class and in the field if you do not feel like talking.

This is a people person job.

If you don't like to talk, you will probably not have much success in any form of medicine.

Most patients don't give a crap or have any idea how good or bad your medical knowledge and skill is. They know you made them feel good or not. You will be judged on this by every patient you ever see.

As well, if you are a gremaphobe or don't like touching people, you might want to find another career.

As for class, I have never seen anyone get kicked out for "not speaking" but instructors are not mind readers, in a practical exam, you have to say everything you think. Because it is not obvious from your action.

So you might not be "kicked" out so to speak, but on more than 1 skill test "fails to take or verbalize body substance isolation" is a critical failure.

As for being involved in group discussions, most students never voluntarily engage in them. But I make it a point to ask a verbal question to each student every class at least once.

Hey man,
Look, sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do, if you're aphasic then it's probably best to let your instructor know.

Should he do so verbally, or in writing?

One of my good friends has a pretty bad stutter. He works in EMS. I am sure he doesn't like to talk but does anyway.

Grow up. I am recommending you do not become an EMT until you mature a little bit.

Get over it?

More then likely you won't be kicked out of the class for not speaking (although some places will find a way). But when it comes to skills testing you will most likely fail.

EMS is about talking to people. If you can't talk to people then you can't really do your job. If you just don't want to talk to people then its time to mature (man up, woman up). Every now and then I stutter and have a hard time pronouncing words but that doesn't stop me or slow me down.

Do you think you might have an undiagnosed anxiety issue? I think there's a difference between being plain ol' shy and being unable to speak.. Shyness is a frame of mind, anxiety is a medical disorder that sometimes requires medication.

Which one are you?

EMT class is a participation based class. If you can't participate you won't pass. Speaking is required of participation.

Refuse to speak in class you will most likely be removed. As others have said, this profession requires communicating with people.

You don't have to speak during the classroom portion but you will have to speak during the practical portion.

There's no way to do this job without speaking, you have to talk to patients, family, your partner, the hospital staff, sometimes you have to talk nicely and professionally, other times you have to be firm and almost a little rude to get your point across. To answer your question, No they don't remove you, but you wont get far.

Actually not that long ago, amphetamine was prescribed for shyness.

Or a six-pack.
