What does your agency do to get you home on time?

lol...getting out on time

So rather than fix some scheduling issues or change the dispatching policy, it sounds like most managements would rather pay overtime.

Obviously some late calls can't be avoided but it seems that most systems might have a few bugs to work out.

Do you guys like taking late calls?

On BLS IFT where our patients are stable and there is no need for immediate transport then no I do not like overtime.

For 911 calls I am ok with taking the call and getting paid some double time.

We have a no hold or recall list that we use if we absolutely cannot be held over. This includes doctor's appointments for either us or our children, travel plans, or fire department sanctioned training.

As far as late jobs, most employees will get to work an hour early and relieve their position. It works out most of the time. It's easy enough to hold a signal coming back from the hospital if you know your relief is waiting. If a good job comes in, you simply go available and take it.

As far as my IFT job, they stagger the start times to help avoid late jobs No calls after the scheduled off time. Really, you need adequate staffing and deployment levels to protect against late calls. Nothing else will work nearly as well. You need enough units to be available that you can protect the units nearing the end of shift. This opposes profitibility, so this cannot be a reality in most places.

We are also required to fuel (off-site) and wash the trucks well inside an out. For a time everyone was getting late calls and the trucks were left dirty and with empty tanks which angered the management a bit. When it was pointed out that it takes an hour to do all that and we were getting called back an hour late (so 2 hours OT every shift) suddenly the late calls went away and trucks were clean again.

Personally I clean the truck every time regardless of whether or not I am getting held over, once I'm late I don't care how late I am.

Our company tried to tell us that we could NOT charge overtime for cleaning the truck, but had to clean it before we left. That didn't last long. We got lots of overtime company didn't seem to care much about it.

My wife and I never made plans for after the time I got off; if I had something that I HAD to do I took the shift off before.

Here we get off on time or a few minutes early on most days; although there are times like today that I was planning on working til midnight (17 hr day) but found out when I got here that I am working 34 1/2hrs straight. But we can sleep and I have only had 1 patient contact in 2 weeks (today).
The overtime here is billed to the test division so it doesn't cost the section any money to speak of.
