Hello everyone! I am going to be starting my EMT-Basic in June. I am wondering what kind of gear to get before hand? Please post what you carry in the ways of flashlights, EMT tools, stehoscopes, etc.. If anyone works for EMSA in OKC, please tell me what they provide and require you to have in the ways of gear and uniform.

Wait to see what your instructor recommends.

just don't be a "gear qu..." nvm. don't carry so much stuff you cant see your belt. When I was working on a truck I carried a set of trauma shears, seatbelt cutter, and a surefire. roll up gloves put a pair in your cargo pocket and that's all you need. kept my ears in the truck unless I was on a call.

Don't worry about any tools in EMT class, save maybe your own stethoscope (a cheapie).

I also bought a BP cuff to practice vitals.

What gear do you need for class? Shoes, clothing, required course books, note tablet, pens, recorder if you do desire, and a bottle of water.

If you are looking to buy gear for working as an EMT, then wait until you pass the class, ask your instrutor if you need anything special for class, and when you start working, ask the agency that you work for what they recommend.

For Ambulance, I jave my scope, shears, knife (alway on me), my radio, a mini mag (only for night time), and a couple sets of gloves in a pocket. For Snow Park, the rules change becasue I need a small jump bag on me (ski patrol type bag) and for SAR... oh boy do the needs change. Wait and see what you need when you need it. If it is needed in class they will probably provide it or inform you before hand that you need this or that.

ah didn't read the for class part usually everything is provided for you that you need.

That's debatable.

Ya, but if you walk into class on the first day naked the instructor may be tempted to put you on a psych hold and start the class of by teaching about mental problems often encountered in the field. Plus, in your case, there will be embarasment of all the new female EMTs pointing and laughing. ^_^

Let's not get the cart before the horse. Your instructor will let you know.

Thanks to everyone who is helping me. In the first post i meant in the field. What do you carry in the field???

This has been discussed before. Might I humbly suggest looking at a certain sticky or trying the search function?

As everyone else has suggested, it's best to wait until you are actually working in the field before soliciting advice on what to carry.

Might I humbly suggest shutting up. At least i am giving everyone something to chat about!

Personally, I carry around the powerglove that was used on Earth 2.

Chill!!! MrC is right and just reminding you that the search feature exists so that you can reference past converstaions on sujects that interest you. Not everyone wants to repeat their choice in scope (your otehr thread) every two weeks because someone new doesn't want to use the search feature.

A newbie telling someone who almost 2 years on the forums under their belt and a longer history than you in EMS to "shut up" is a sure way to piss eveyone else here off and get themselves banned. If you have a problem with MrC's dirrect (and helpful) response, then might I suggest a carrer change where you won't have to deal with people?

Oh, and the Nintendo Power Glove sucked for anything except for boxing games! But the Wii ROCKS!

runninhot, You had a good question and one we all asked ourselves.

The answer is show up for class dressed comfortably, suggest no sagging or twisted ball caps, maybe no gangsta shirts....Kidding!B)

You're going to school. They will tell you what to get when you need it. If they don't give you as complete a list of books as you think you might need, let us know we can give you tips.

If they DO suggest texts and maybe basic stethoscopes, might I asuggest you find your local medical college and see what their student and book stores have for sale? Also, their bulletin board may have folks trying to sell used but still accepted (see your teacher) texts, references. By the way, a good cheap "nurse's" steth is better than a cheap two tube Sprague-Rappaport.

Do not spring for an expensive stethscope, expensive bandage shears, or an EKG caliper unless you find you really need it.
Good luck, keep up on your meds, welcome to bedlam!

Check with your instructor. You don't need to go out buying everything under the sun right now.

Read the class syllabus. That'll tell you what to bring to class.

...as far as what stuff to bring to work, worry about that when, or if, you graduate from EMT class.
