What do you carry with you?

Thanks to everyone who is helping me. In the first post i meant in the field. What do you carry in the field???

Oh, now I got it. In the field, the only thing you should have is a good stethescope. You can get a good one for ~ $40. Anything from the Littmann brand. They're kinda like Ray Bans or Oakleys. The same quality of lens, just some are made to be more expensive. With Littmanns, you get the same quality sound from each and every model, just some are more expensive.

Everything else will/should be provided by your company. There is one common truth here that I think you should be made aware of:

Those who try to look or sound important, don't.

Go with the basics and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps.

Might I humbly suggest shutting up. At least i am giving everyone something to chat about!

Something that has been chatted about and chatted about and chatted about. you didnt bring anything new to the table.

Give us something new or lose the attitude when people nicely suggest you search before starting the 100th thread on this topic

Ummm....my bag off of the truck and, depending upon the call, the monitor and/or drug box. Also have my stethascope with me.

Not even in EMT class yet so take it what it's worth.

I'd carry a decent set of ears. Doesn't have to be expensive, but ones that allow you to hear heart and lung sounds in a noisy environment. Actually, you don't even have to be able to disguish heart sounds really. Just hear blood flow when taking a BP. Most EMS can't distinguish murmers, etc.

Set of trauma shears.

Pen Light.

BP cuff would be nice for practicing BPs during or before class.

Find out what your attire is going to be and get that. Here we wear EMT pants with cargo pockets, boots, and a blue shirt. Depends on your area.

Things I don't think you need to carry:
Window punch: It's not that hard to break a window. All the ambulances I have seen have a forced entry kit.
Seatbelt cutter: Trauma shears will do.
Bandage scissors: Trauma shears will do.
Twessors/Pickups: If someone calls 911 for a spliter, well you get the point... lol

Flashlight is optional. I have the cheapest model of surefire. It was like $35, it is super bright, I mainly use it for hunting/camping, but it would be a nice addition to an EMS belt at night.

Don't go all superman with buying gear. I made the mistake of buying a BLS kit from galls and never plan on using it for work. But it does come in handy when out in the woods or family injuries, etc.

If you want to keep some supplies in your car, I'd recommend:
1 Sam Splint
Some 4x4's
Instant Ice Packs
Cravats
Bandages
Neosporin
Tape
etc, you know, basic first aid supplies.

I know the question has been asked before, and alot of the answers you got are typical. Doing a search I found some helpful tips and many not so helpful, usually from the same people. I started school 3 weeks ago and we were told to get a good stethoscope, Littmann Classic II SE was recommended, a watch with a second hand, penlight, and BP cuff. BP cuff not so much for the field, but for practice in labs and for anyone who will stick their arm out for you. I don't know what your school will require, but those mentioned will help you for the practice. Many in our class rarely take a break and when there is a break, many will be practing vitals over and over. So those items are of some value if you will use them.

Here is NOT what to carry with you to EMSA or they will leave you at the station/post, drop the attitude or get out! Sorry, we have about 100+ students and we don't need any with attitudes. Your clnical as a basic will be more of an observation that "hands on"; yes you will get to do some v.s. and assist in capabilities such as CPR, etc.

As previously posted, did you think to look in your syallubus or clinical book? If you go to OSU, EOC, and definitely OCCC it is all listed! Be in uniform, on time, ink pen, stethoscope and a clean appropriate uniform with appropriate name tag & I.D., a watch and maybe some shears. Know your objectives as stated in your clinical packet to be able to meet those.

Good luck,

R/r 911

You know.... it never occured to me, but a watch with a second hand seems like it might be a problem for some people. Timex makes good, inexpensive ones that hold up well under abuse

Now that is funny, and sadly you are probably right.

cheap pens and a small note pad. Dunkin donuts receipts work great for note taking meds and pmh stuff. The cheap stethoscopes work fine. I haven't used my 150 dollar littman in months.
