This is a hypothetical question of course :)

If given the choice, would you:

a) Take a job that paid $10,000 more, was close to home, and involved you doing something that you loved doing.
b) Take a job that paid $10,000 less than job a, was in another state you've never been before, but involved something you love doing?

Discuss! (thanks)

You can always visit the state you've never been before. Be cheaper than moving also. I would take the job that paid $10,000 more, was close to home, and involved you doing something you loved. JMO.

I had to deal with the same thing.

I came home..... I make less but family is what is most important.

I am glad I made the decision I did.

Isn't A the obvious answer here.
  1. Close to home
  2. Pays more
  3. Is what you love to do
Was the options mistyped? Am I missing something here?

I would have to go with the first one UNLESS there is a reason to move.... Basicly I had to do the 2nd one because of circumstances that happened at home (post WTC).... I took a 15,000 reduction in pay, credit went down the drain, actually do 2 jobs in one..... BUT I love my job AND provided a better enviroment for my family. Choice is yours, good luck B)

Do what you love and love what you do... $$$ isn't everything, although it is a nice cushion.

"A" is something I like doing a lot, but is a desk job, whereas b is something I love doing, and is what I spent five years of school studying.

Hmmm.

I came back just to answer this..

Take the pay cut, hop on the road, where's your sense of adventure? Money is great, I love money, we all do; but no amount of money can make you truely happy. How often do we get to choose a job in life that we love to do? Sometimes you have to decide whether it's worth the want more than the need. If you can say that it's something you will enjoy doing for the rest of your life, and it came from your heart, then you've already answered the question.

So that's what it takes to get you back, huh?

Given the fact that both "a" and "b" would eseentially be desk jobs, given what your degree is in we can rule that out as a deciding fiactor.

As far as the money goes, "a" is an obvious answer but you have to consider the cost of living at both locations. Is "b" a cheaper area to live, where the difference in pay is not as pronounced?

Then comes the most important part of your decisino....which location will allow you to remain in EMS? :P

And if this matters at all, not only is Florida hiring teachers, but Sarasota County is going to be building 2 new fire stations this year and next, hiring 47 more FF/EMT, and Manatee County is adding on two more Rescues (ambulances) which they will need to hire 14-17 more "medics".

Plus there are always private transport companies that are hiring.

One is an EMS job, the other isnt.

It's killing me!

if it is a Desk EMS job, would it be a "white shirt" position??? If so.. good for you!

I would do whatever my wife told me to do...

Not Applicable in this case....

After your first post I'd say A, but after reading second I'd say B. You can always move back, and it sounds like A might be stable enough to stick around if B doesn't work out.

This is how I choose in these situations...Which one in 5 years would I be kicking my *** for not taking.

I took the job with EMS, I'm making 8.75 an hour, and I passed up working in dispatch for 14 an hour. And we really need the money. I talked it over with my husband and he fortunately supports whatever I want to do, so I basically chose B and am glad I did.

WHKR is right, you already know in your heart which one you want and that's what you should take.

Oh yeah my county is desperate too...we've lost 7 medics in the last 2/3 months to the fire dept and a lot more of both in the last year. Obviously pay isn't that great here though.
