hello everyone,

I am going to be starting paramedic school hopefully next year. Currently I work as a EMT doing IFT. I have the option of continuing as an EMT during school, or becoming a telemetry tech (possibly become an ER tech from there)

What is everyone's thoughts ?

Which one has better hours, more flexible, better pay, better working conditions?

Telemetry pays more, otherwise they are both 2 12 hour shifts a week. Would telemetry benefit me as much? I figure since its BLS not much will benefit me while I am in school.

Or would it be most beneficial to look and become an ER tech? I am looking to learn as much as I can to become a better paramedic

I'm not altogether certain what exactly a telemetry technician does, but I'm assuming it has something to do with watching telemonitors somewhere. If that's the case, then no it really isn't going to help you very much. Staring at lead II for hours on end until you damn near go blind will prepare you well for BS ALS transfers, but that's about it. You'll be somewhat ahead of the curve during basic cardiology and little more.

I would personally stay on the road and start to build on and research ALS concepts as you encounter them in your practice. You can learn plenty on an IFT if you do more than take a bloop pressure every fifteen minutes and try to stay awake.

Telemetry tech. Pays more and you don't need to be an EMT first to be a medic.

I was a Telemetry tech while in nursing school after getting my EMT-B. The benefits from a hospital will usually be better than EMS. It paid more than being an EMT, great insurance, and got tuition assistance for school. The experience was good and I learned a ton about rhythms and EKGs however it can get monotonous. However you do not get any patient care experience.

Which will assist you more to get a job as a paramedic once you graduate?

which will give you downtime during work to study and do HW?

while pay isn't everything, which will get you better set for a long term career?

which will be more flexible with your schedule while in paramedic school?

which offers better working conditions?
