Hey,
My friend on another squad was telling me that they got on the front of their rig a device mounted that, if the car in front of you isn't getting out of your way, can somehow make the car vibrate.
He wasn't sure what it was called or where to get one.
Anyone ever hear of this?

I don't remember the name of the device.. but I know Denver Health Paramedics had it on a few of their buses. Felt it a few times when I was living there. Seemed to work ok.

Unless there's something new I'm not aware of, I'd assume they are talking about a rumbler siren by federal signal.

Yep that would be the one I'm thinking of.

I had a quote of about $900. I would have bought them in a minute but I was told there might be an issue with the mounts on our new Navistar 4300 so we didn't buy them.

We call them growlers. They work extremely well from my use with them. However we have been advised to not use them when there is any pedestrians around.

Do you know why?

they use em plenty here in San Francisco, and lord knows there are always pedestrians around here.

We got complaints from pedestrians saying that it damaged their hearing and made them lose their hearing for a couple of mins. So to save on possible lawsuits (welcome to California the sue happy state) we are not allowed to use it when there are any pedestrians in the area.

Only 3 or 4 of our ambulances have the system on them.

ours work great...and i also just found out that some of our trucks have dash cams that can take a picture or the license plate of the car that does not move out of the way.

Ha! I love calling those in! Since we are run out of the SO and dispatched by the SO comm center, all I do is get on the local channel and report a failure to yield and give the tag number. Pretty soon we get a deputy headed our way.

As for the growler/howler/rumbler/whatchamacallit...we don't use em. State Patrol has one car with it in the area and it sure sounds neat. I would like to see us get them too. The trooper with the equipped car assigned to him says it does a fantastic job of moving deer our of the way.

Then again so does my tubular steel brush guard. That moves deer REALLY well. :-D

Now there's a selling point! We hit deer all the time around here.

I want to put on of those on my personal truck :P
