Hi guys,

Im a New York State EMT-B who just moved to California and wanted to get a part-time job here. Ive heard its difficult as they won't accept my state cert but require the NREMT testing process. Does anyone know any way to work as an EMT without having to re-take all those tests again? Also, is there any other hospital-environment type jobs I can do with an out-of-state EMT license (like working as a driver or behind a counter in a hospital?)

Any ideas you guys could throw out there would be helpful!

Cheers,

Levi

To work as an EMT you need to have a state/county card for where you work, there's no way around it. To work as a driver only or a clerk then no you don't need it, but you won't be touching any patients.

A hospital might take an out-of-state EMT license since the state EMS Authority, nor the Local EMS Agencies regulate in-hospital care.

Besides that, your best bet is likely to take the NREMT exam (it's not that hard).

Chances are you will just have to take an NREMT-B assessment...thats what I had to do to get my FL cert, just like taking NR for certification w/o the skills test. Do you really want to sit behind a desk all day?

You might as well just bend over and grab your ankles now because you've moved into the most administratively screwed up state for EMS in the US and one that, despite that, is massively over-saturated with EMTs.

Agree 100%. All I have heard from HR is talk about the stacks of resumes and apps overtaking their desks.
Florida's a close #2. The only two reasons those states don't both are not the absolute bottom of the barrel as far as EMS is concerned is that at least they are not Maryland.
