Hey yall, Im currently enrolled in So-cal. North valley occupational center for my EMT 1 course, I'd like to know if their is anything else I can do while attending school only 3 days a week. I do work full time as well but I feel like I should be doing more towards my career and education

Should I be volunteering at a hospital Etc?

thanks for the heads up

Look into taking biology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology courses at your local community college. Look at the pre-requisites for the paramedic school you wish to go to and start working on those.

Volunteering won't do you much good unless you've been certified for a while and you absolutely can't find a job but need to start knocking off hours towards medic school.

Yeah, most hospitals don't let you do squat when you're volunteering.

That's for sure. I volunteered at a hospital and i didn't do really anything the whole time i was there. It's good if you want to listen in on what is going on. I wouldn't recommend it though unless you have a lot of time on your hands and your really that bored. It can't hurt you to do it.

I'd suggest just calling around and seeing if anyone will let you help out. Or even better going to places and making an apperance may be your best bet into getting the green light to help out.

I'm actually in the process of getting everything together to start my first EMT class too and also trying to get on volunteering or just riding along a few times. Ill let ya know if I have any luck with anything and maybe able to help out a little.

Chemistry
Biochemistry
Physics
Anatomy and Physiology with lab
Pharmacology
General Pathology/pathophysiology (if avaliable)
English/oral communication
Professional writing
Scientific research methods
Systems/operations management

Take those, then you can move onto clinical stuff

wow, looks like alot of info.. and classes to take out at pierce( my local comm college) problem is down here in so cal their are really only 2 routes for medic program I have seen available, its either UCLA or ventura college both which are at least 1 hour away distance from my house unfortunately..

I didnt realize all those ^ above classes are necessary as well wow

With the exception of A&P with lab not all of those classes listed above are necessary per se, but together they will help you become a more well rounded paramedic that can truly understand the "why" in a disease process rather than simply regurgitating "First I push a tan box then a pink box".

The more college education you stack up in front of your paramedic core curriculum, the better you'll do.

The long and short of it? General knowledge is your friend.

Necessary to become a para-technician (which, to be fair, is most of So Cal's EMS providers)? No.

Necessary to become a professional instead of a technician? Absolutely. I didn't want to be a technician, so I decided to not become a paramedic as the progressive systems are few and far between, and no where near So. Cal.

Where are you located? Ventura and UCLA are not the only paramedic courses in the LA/Ventura area

Im in Woodland Hills/calabasas/reseda/ Sherman Oaks Area.. Woodland Hills to be Exact.

While UCLA and Ventura are the two closest in LA county there is also Mt. Sac and PTI (although I highly discourage from PTI).
There are more schools in socal (orange co/riverside/santa barabara/and san diego) if you don't mind the drive or relocating
