I am a new EMT in NYC, 3 months in. I just got hired to a Transport Company in Brooklyn and i volunteer frequently to continue getting 911 experience. I know they say everyone has to work at least 6 months Transport before one can apply for 911. My question is, what can i do now until the time comes for me to apply to 911 Agencies to make me a better or more attractive candidate for a 911 job with a Hospital?

Avoid buffing calls.
In all seriousness, if they require 6 months of IFT experience, just put in your time. Learn from this experience, as there's actually a lot to pick up. Talk to patients, look up medical conditions from their charts, start correlating home medications with their medical history, look at the hospital's physical exam findings and labs and what these mean when you examine the patient.
At the end of your 6 months, explain to the hiring board or interviewer for the 911 job about everything you learned. Impress them with the quality of customer service you can provide, and prepare for it like any other job interview. There are plenty of positions, and I'm certain you can find a way in if you so desire.

Nobody in nyc gets hired at a 911 with only 6 months experience. They may put that down as a minimum requirement, but everyone goes past that.

Not true, may have lesser of chance, but certainly not a correct blanket statement. If I spent years at an IFT, it would have not prepared be for 911 anymore than 6 months would have.

From what I hear NY is a very different animal than we are used to in most of the rest of the country.
EMS varies greatly depending on location, agency, and timing. I have no doubt that NY is a very different animal than the rest of the county, but that is actually true for a lot of places. That's one of the weird things about EMS is how different it is everywhere.

Get with a private that could lead you to a 911 promotion:
Seniorcare EMS (KBJ + BKH contracts)
Transcare (I hear their in trouble though) (Bunch of bronx contracts, NYU, etc)
Hunter Ambulance (NYHQ contract)
Get with a private that does emergencies to non-hospital healthcare facilities (assisted living, SNFs, docs offices):
Seniorcare EMS, Transcare, RCA
If your into alot of dialysis calls and not too much emergency action: Midwood, Lifeline, Priority1. I don't know about the other "little guys" in NYC ie citywide, firstresponse, primary care, etc.
Also Volunteer to get STREET experience. I'm talking about MVAs, peds struck, etc. The only other way you would get street experience is in a private when you get flagged down, or you stop and ask if someone needs help, especially at an MVA and no EMS is there yet.
I've seen some hospitals put 6 months minimum, I'm going all out applying everywhere once I hit my 6 months, and the volunteer experience wouldn't hurt either. LIJ I hear hires without experience.
Don't listen to the naysayers on buffing. There are experienced folks in volunteer ambulances who will show you the way. Just don't buff at a private ambulance

I'd be interested to know what happens when one of these agencies that "buffs" calls has an ambulance responding lights and sirens to a call they're not assigned to and they get into a MVA or hit a pedestrian and seriously injures or kills someone.
If that was my family member I'd be pretty pissed off to know that ambulance was going code to a call that they weren't officially dispatched to.

I would highly advise you go against this advise. Not only is it illegal it could cost you your job. Almost all of us on here have put in the time going BLS transports. Get your 6 months and apply like crazy. Get your routine down while working BLS, get to know the different conditions and the medications that go with said conditions. I worked 10 months of BLS before I got hired on with a 911 company. Keep your head up, get your feet wet and don't stop learning. You'll get the coveted 911 job in due time.

I say again just because everyone does it don't make it right.
Yet it only would take one crew from one volunteer ambulance service, one time to completely get buffing calls to be illegal and have real consequences for doing it. Adam don't be fooled by the this is how it's always been and is acceptable. I've worked EMS for a while now and at one event location a young lady died as a result of a OD and the venue limited the events of that type and then cancelled all further events of that type because of the one incident. Now there is talk of not permitting these events at all in the county because a couple more people died from ODs. To put this more into perspective for you it used to be that this county you could listen to your scanner and buff calls as you put it, but thanks to a few boneheaded mistakes crews made; it's now illegal to buff calls.

By the time its illegal I'll be on to bigger and better things. Once I'm 911, I'll spend my free time doing things I don't have the time for that I used to have the time for: Cycling, photography, travel, etc.
