Hey everyone, just started EMT-B class down here in florida.
It is 12 weeks. (Summer term)

I was wondering if you guys had any good study advice for Lecture and Lab.
Any good ways to study, etc.
Much appreciated.

Also doing EVOC this upcoming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
So any helpful advice is appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Since your class is 6 weeks shorter than mine was, and it was crazy fast, I'd say you should study every free minute you have. Take the best notes you can in lectures, ask the professor for a copy of his lecture notes, and quickly form good relations with other students, especially those who know what's up. Make sure you either join or start a study group with those individuals. My study group met twice a week. During the study group, you can have fun, but make sure you cover the material, because sometimes my group wouldn't even open the textbook for the whole time, and all of our quiz scores dropped a few points. And most importantly, don't stress. :)

Read the chapter before each class. Read the chapter before each class. I say it twice because it cannot be stressed enough. You will do much better if you read the chapter, and it gives you the opportunity to ask questions about concepts that you might need clarification on.

The end of class comes quick, don't get behind. If your doing your NREMT make sure you have some good hands on practice with your skill sheets. We spent the last 3 classes (4 hours each night) just going through 'mock' practicals. It helped soooo much when it came time for the NREMT practical.

As others said start reading, get ahead and stay ahead. Class should be a review of the material in your text book and a time to ask questions for clarification not the first time you see the material. Emt B is very simple material but when presented in a short class it can be a lot of info so break it up into chunks.

I just finished my EMT class in New Port Richey Florida and am now waiting to take the nremt, Where are you going to school in florida ?

Thanks everyone. Will definitely use some of those tips.
They should help me out a lot.

And I am taking the course at Seminole State College.

And I am taking the course at Seminole State College.

Don't think much of their courses, I quote:

EMS 0065 - CPR for EMS Students

This eight-hour course is designed to provide the student with training in adult, child and infant Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Included in this course is training in the Automotive External Defibrillator (AED), and various barrier devices. A practical evaluation is required for ASHI certification. This course is required for all students applying for the EMT and Paramedic programs who are not currently certified in CPR.

Hmmm, battery in my car needs replacing, can I get a jumpstart?

My three biggest tips are:

1) Read ahead
2) Stay ahead
3) Be in class

As others have said, EMT-B is very simple stuff. Important, but simple. You just gotta do it so that you know what (and how) you're expected to do the various skills and when you're supposed to do them. If you're not in class, it won't be easy.

Read the chapter before class. Go to class. Read the chapter again and take notes. Take an online quiz to confirm you know what you've studied. Prepare any questions you have for the instructor for the next day.

Basically, follow the same principles that you'd use for any college-level class.

My three biggest tips are:

1) Read ahead
2) Stay ahead
3) Be in class

I'll add a couple:
4) Ask questions when something doesn't make sense. There's no such thing as a stupid one
5) If you want to pass the class, read ahead and stay ahead. If you want to be a good provider, read and understand

Good luck!

Also, does anybody have any tips for remembering, the trauma assessment, medical assessment, pretty much all the lab stuff? Seems like a lot.
Not impossible, but I guess going over it and doing it again and again will help.

Do you have a dog? Practice on the dog. If you don't have a dog order one of these and use a sharpie to draw the organs in. Practice your assessment just like you would in real life. Scene assessment, BSI, top to bottom assessment, do it over and over, you'll get it.

When you're done practicing with it you can carry it around with you at Walmart and talk to it. It's a great way to keep the crazies from bothering you ;)

Did BBG seriously just suggest a blow up doll for the sake of education?

I like your style BBG.

Repetition... Also, it may help you if you write it down, from start to finish, over and over again.. I've found that I retain a great deal more information if I write it down as I read it.

For all of the skill sheets I find that it helped to understand why certain things are done in the order they are listed.

You could memorize SAMPLE and OPQRST. You may not know what it exactly means at first but that's okay you will.

I wrote songs. I have a vital signs song and an initial assessment song. I wanted to make trauma and medical ones but it got too complicated. That really only worked for stuff I had to rattle off quickly. Side note: I remembered everything, but I caught myself humming during the practical

In good news, I have already mastered Medical Assessment.
I choke up everything I do Trauma. Can't quite remember it all when I do the Detailed assessment.

Don't just memorize the list. As you get to each body part, think to yourself "What information from here would be useful?" and "What should I be checking?"
