Yeah, breaking off the tail rotor is what made it extra hard.

FAA will consider that a crash for sure..... Have seen "hard landings" where just the skids spread and the rest of the airframe was fine classified as a crash when the NTSB shows up. Sucks big time for insurance rates.

Glad to see everyone was ok though...

I have no specific knowledge of what happened, but I really doubt it was an issue of forgetting where the ground was. And wind shear isn't usually an issue in takeoff.
