Firdt job as an emt and 2 of my shifts each week say float next to them. Can anyone explain exactly what it means.

What kind of job is it? Tech or ambulance?

That means no set shift,
Station, or truck. You pick up shifts based on the needs of the service

You may be in the float pool, able to be assigned as needed.

This is exactly what it means. So you may be in that station for that shift but your next one you may or may not be.

My first inclination would have been to call the manager, the scheduling manager or operations manager or whomever you have been instructed to call at your place of employment for such things as opposed to posting a work related question such as this which might of been an accident, could mean something entirely different to your particular place of employment, or could be exactly one of the things the others have stated...but that is just me.

(Yes, that was all one sentence)

Is it normal for a newbie to be in a float shift?

They accidentally put float by your name. Always a possibility. My whole point is when you have a question about your schedule and your job, you need to take it to the people who created it or operate it. None of what any of us said here matters until you go to the source.

Yes, a float shift is the **** job, so perfect for newbies.

Why is it the **** job? Is it just because you dont know where your going?

Lots of places put the new guy on float until they figure out a permanent assignment. It sucks when you're brand new, but after you've been there a while the variety in partners, stations and trucks can be nice.

Yeah, I don't mind the occasional your doing float. Keeps me on my toes.
