This question is for anyone with hiring experience... What are the main things ambulance companies are looking for in their EMT-B candidates?
I'm looking to start applying and want to become a paramedic ASAP. I have a BS degree in Exercise Science along with some certs and some fire schooling. Will this set me ahead of other EMT candidates?

No, they are hiring an EMT. And fire certs mean nothing unless you are in a fire based system.

They want the most qualified driver and partner they can find for the least amount of pay with a cpr card, drivers license and driving record that the insurance company will not jack up insurance rates if they hire them.

As to the Paramedic part. Just be sure that they are able to hire you as a medic if you upgrade, or you will simply look like a short term employee to them. Which some companies really don't mind.

I agree with that your sayings, but when comparing two similar applications, you wouldn't lean more towards the one with a college education?

Not necessarily...why would you think it is more important?

Which is more appealing when hiring an EMT to drive an ambulance around?

Somebody with a College degree and 2 speeding tickets or a High School drop out with a GED and a clean driving record?
The insurance company isn't going to care what the degree is in. They're just going to see the 2 tickets and charge more in premiums. Making that person less desirable.

this is comforting :excl: as long as you can drive (or not get caught driving poorly) you can get a job as an EMT. regardless of wether or not you have half a brain or clinical competencies.

Welcome to EMS.

A college degree, military, or prior EMS experience. Does not mean a damn thing, if you cannot do a proper assessment or show competency to perform CPR.
