well im leaving my old emt job to go to a bigger one. Problem. i went to my girl friends parents. Before I knew what was up her dad was smoking a doobie across the room this happened twice. I could smell the weed strong! I am a no drug use never have never will. But i just found out my new job requires drug testing will this cause me to fail. I would really hate to lose my job do to someone else!!!:sad:

No. It wont. There are tolerances built in to adjust for second hand smoke.

I administer urine and saliva based drug tests in my clinic. Every one I have been trained on have certain ranges or tolerances before it will show a positive. These ranges allow for things like accidental exposure .

How many times have you been inside of a motel room or apartment filled with smoke from drugs?
Ok maybe that's just where I work but I've had to do plenty of exposure reports because of it so it didn't come back on me. Hell I was bored once after we coded a methhead in their meth smoke filled apartment and we went and got home test kits from the store and neither of us failed even after being in the apartment for nearly an hour. Albeit we did start airing it out and fire busted out a ventilation fan.
P.S. Meth smoke smells like :censored::censored::censored::censored:.

While you didn't fail, did you guys end up cleaning stuff afterward, just because?
My understanding of the tests is that they're designed to detect obvious usage, not casual contact. On the other hand, if you practically live inside a bong and you're constantly finding stuff to munch on, even if you're not using, you might have an issue... after a while. Duude...:rofl:

Yes, you will test positive! Any exposure to marijuanas, of any amount, will make you test dirty! In fact, there are even recorded cases where looking too closely at a marijuana made people test positive. Just to be safe, you shouldn't even think about pot. It's the most dangerous drug in the known universe!

So, I used to smoke pot, a lot of pot. I was one of those stoner kids you make fun of. This was all well before I got into EMS, although after I had some jobs I probably shouldn't have been stoned while doing ("Dude, this laser will cut through a half inch thick piece of steel...want a hit?").
Having been a pot head in California, I had no idea I was a pot snob until I started smelling the crap they smoke in New Mexico. Even the stuff they smoke in Honduras smells better than this :censored::censored::censored::censored:. Every once in a while I smell good pot, but it's rare, most of this crap smells like, well, crap.

The short answer is that we highly doubt it. Simply being in the same room as someone who's smoking just isn't going to give you a sufficiently high dose to make you test positive. Yes, you will have a small exposure, but it's very low. Now if you were taking hits off that same doobie, then you'd have a problem. The dose you'd be receiving that way is much higher than you'd get by simply being in the same area.
Tests can be extremely sensitive, but they desensitize them to account for unintentional second-hand exposure. These tests are set up to detect actual, delibrate usage.
