Can someone explain to me what a "map test" consists of?

Hello to all,
So I just recently received my EMT-B Cert (NYS). So I applied to my first position last night and today I heard back from their HR who called me in for an interview. He sent me an email with all the details of what to expect and bring with me and one of those details was that I would be taking a "simple map exam". Can someone please explain to me what to expect, is this something I can study or prepare myself for?

Thanks a lot for the help.

How to read a map to get from one address to another.

For example, find the intersection on 1st and braid street and then write down the route you would follow to get to St farthest Hospital.

Thanks for the explanation. I've never actually seen it done. Hopefully it'll be as easy as he says.

Kind of an odd pre-employment test. I suppose if you show absolutely no ability to use a simple atlas a company may pass but aside from that field training is the time to get familiar with an area.

Our map test here comes at the end of your internship and it is not fun. Addresses of 30+ public buildings, map crosses of intersections, routing between two obscure locations, exit numbers, things like that. I'm sure yours will be very unlike that, happily.

I've noticed that it doesn't seem to be that common at all. I asked my CIC and he had no clue what it was. I also tried to research this subject several times before I made this post and Only found about two other posts on the internet about this. I would hope its not that hard especially since it's not an area I know. Thanks for the input

A pre-employment map test is usually pretty simple. If you're expected to know a first due area following a probationary period, it's much more difficult. (My fire department map test was 8 pages of BLANK maps that I had to draw the street names on!!!)

I would suggest you inquire as to what is actually expected in that specific system as it appears it varies considerably between systems. Around here, the equivalent is that before you are released you would be expected to describe the locations of all the major roads (by name and number), the landing zone locations, and how to get to the hospitals from various locations, without using a map or GPS.

There was a similar thread here a couple years ago, probably from a different state. map-test.32643

But a "simple map test" is probably just to demonstrate basic competency in map reading, though it might help if you were at least familiar enough with the area in question to be able to find major roads and towns without extensive searching or using the index.

Off the shelf paper road maps are extinct around here. You can't buy them. We have custom made map books for the emergency vehicles and first due maps for the stations.

Thanks to all for the replies. I took the "simple map test" and I guess I either did very well because there was no comment on it or they really didn't acknowledge it. But I ended up getting the job. This was the first interview I've had since I've received my Certification. So once again thanks to all.
