Im looking to apply to FDNY EMT or Paramedic position, however the FDNY website does not have any information, well that I can find anyway, about foreigners looking to apply. Can anyone help me with any information. Im a fully qualified Advanced Care Paramedic who is completing a degree in Paramedic Science as the service (Queensland Ambulance Service) only issues a Diploma after you complete your student program. I also have a Biomedical Science Degree. I have 2 years qualified experience and 2.5 years as a student paramedic prior to qualifying. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you already got your visa?

I am also assuming you will need to take the NREMT and become licensed before applying.

Sorry I am apparently talking out of my ***. New York doesn't do national registry from what I have read.

New York isn't a national registry state. They might let you enroll on a refresher with a national registry certification though.
Once you have that you will also need to get your New York City Remac certification.
Once that's done there are two ways to apply to FDNY either through a civil service list or provisional. At the moment it seems like they are hiring only off the civil service list though that may change - they are expecting to lose a lot of medics to the upcoming fire classes

Unfortunately, there is no specific visa available for what you want to do, so unless you already have an 'in' (you didn't say) you will probably find it very, very difficult.

You will need your New York paramedic cert and to take the NYC REMAC test. In order to apply.

I'll be the one to ask, why?! OZ paramedics are way more advanced than American paramedics.

You may find that with some exceptions, our EMS system is lagging behind yours. You are also quite a bit more qualified than US providers.

I don't have a huge amount of experience, but from what I hear, basic Aussie Paramedics complete an 8 week course and can give IV lines (?) but not 12 leads. Of course this could be entirely wrong, but I think the educational priorities are just in a different order than here.

After watching the paramedic recruit show, I'm moving to OZ

Amen.

OP, why, exactly, do you want to come to America?

You know that Paramedics aren't the "Most trusted profession" and are sure as heck not paid for it.

I'm not even going to tell you how to apply because it would be wrong of me to assist you in ruining your career.

Stay away. Far away.

Thanks Guys!

Ok so from majority of ur posts, i will decrease my skills, decrease my pay, n u all think im crazy!! BTW the recruits show wasnt all that accurate. Does aanyone have any questions about being a paramedic in OZ?

Well, if you aren't an ICP, you might increase your scope/skills, but you'll be overtrained compared to the average USA Medic. I think pay cut is pretty spot on.

I'm sure you've got some personal motivations, so if it's truly worth it to you, I'm sure we can help you... but we also want you to understand how crazy you're sounding.

I use to work with a couple guys from Queensland ambulance service on a international contract I was on. One was ACP the other was ICP. From my understanding of what the ACP guy told me, your scope of practice and skill set would increase in the USA, however.. most our paramedic programs require you have your EMT-B(around 3 months 120ish hours) are around 1 year in length and approximately 1200 clock hours. Some paramedics complete degree program, but they are normally associates degrees(2 years) and are not mandatory. At present time there is only around 11 university's I am aware of that offer an undergraduate degree for Paramedics, with a population of over 350 million that is not many ;-)

So yes you will find your formal education is more than the majority of our highest level provider "Paramedic" but our Paramedic scope of practice is wider, like your ICP, probably due to the fact most of us are operating by medical control and protocols.

Also your country is having a paramedic shortage and recruiting international paramedics, ours is not. The U.S. will probably not give you a work visa unless you have another way in, such as a student visa, marrying a citizen, ect ect

PS: My ICP buddy is still working down in Emerald, Queensland. You ever get by that way?

I actually working in Rockhampton, which is three hours from Emerald. Im actually in the process of completing a degree at a university here, so not sure id that will help. Thankyou for all your help.
