What do you guys bring to eat when you ride ?

EMS people need something to eat; cheap, healthy, and neat, IMHO. I get Mc D's or B.K. $1 menu items. I also bring Bumble Bee Tuna or Chicken Salad, in the little box with crackers which go on sale every twelve weeks or so at CVS for $0.99. I having started eating several times a day. I...

    Communications - Cell Towers

Anyone know a link for info about how many calls/cell phones a given cell tower can handle. I assume if thousands of people, at an event in a park for example, could overwhelm the tower calling in an incident. I tried to STFW but to no avail. Thank you.

    A very useful thread about a possible j. - o. - b.

For the good of the board, and the good people on it, I am posting what I know as fact that there is an opening at a NYC IFT Service. Why don't I want it myself, you ask ? Because I decided to stick with volunteering and doing what I do for $ and save up to attend a Paramedic Program...

Comments on this story; signs and symptoms of a stroke.

This story is sort of getting to me. I am not even certain it is true as it was told to me by someone who heard it from a relative who worked at the same IFT service as the person who it happened to. According to the story, routine patient being transported from nursing home to some facility...

    EMS is public safety.

It crosses over with health care in the ER room. The staff of the ER room is public safety and health care. The rest of the hospital is not. An instructor in my police academy said he never wrote ER staff but he said nothing of health care providers who do not work in an ER. It also...

    Driving an Ambulance

What was the hardest part for you to overcome ? For me it was the fact I can not look at the back, regardless of the curved mirrors and back-up camera. Also, I need to make wider right turns. What were the hurdles, if any for you ? Also, what do you see others do wrong ? I see too...

IN YOUR OWN WORDS: saline versus sterile water

Please do not let another reply influence your response. Articulate how you think of it. An ambulance, in NYS, at least, has sterile water and saline. Is saline considered sterile? Can you use it to flush an eye out ? Under what circumstances would you personally use either one only...

etiquette, protocol and manners among EMS

So I am visitng my parents and a situation occurs where I needed to call EMS for my Dad. In my parent's area, paid paramedics arrive first, in a fly-car, do an assesment and then EMTs in an ambulance come and they designate the patient either BLS or ALS and transport accordingly. The...

I have a question about the New York State EMT Basic Card.

The card issued by the New York State Department of Health is paper. If someone were to laminate it, would he or she be breaking any citeable Federal, State, or Local law ? Would it be violating any citeable policy of any overseeing organization such as The US Dept. of Transportation. NYS...

    Any comments on this one......

Your best guess. Was this senility or was this man always un-informed. An 88 year old retired MD, an orthopedist. Must have been successful, nice house, clean, well maintained. He complained of weakness, fainted twice, his wife reported his blood pressure was fluctuating all day, hi, then...

What have you done or would you do in this "sticky wicket" ?

I have had this happen before in other jobs. There is one person in my service that tries to engage me in chit-chat at inappropriate times. I otherwise like this person and do not want to alienate them. Thank god I have yet to be on a job with them. It started during the orientation and...

    question on OPA's

Someone told me it is ok and beneficial to go a little bigger, but never smaller. My service has become more strict about equipment checking. The form reads "two sets of six sizes." However, in the equipment room, there are nine different sizes. The ops vp told me any six are ok but try to...

advice on keeping the stretcher from tipping over

Thank god it has not yet happened. Any pointers from you veterans on keeping it that way. I get uneasy, especially when it is fully raised. One guy told me each person should be diagonally opposite. We were taking my mentors 95 year old grandmother home from the hospital one night, and...
