    Newly Appointed EMS Lieutenant: Advice/Questions

Hello all, I was just appointed to EMS Lt. of my small (350 call/year) volunteer fire department. We do not run a transporting ambulance, only a rescue truck to assist the transporting ambulance. A little background on me: I'm 21 years old and work full time as an EMT-I for a 911/IFT company...

    Preparing for Paramedic School?

Background: I'm currently certified as a Basic, Awaiting test results from the Intermediate class I just finished. I've been an EMT for about 14 months. As far as field experience, I've been with a volunteer rescue squad the entire time, and have probably run 200 or so calls with them as an EMT...

    HAZMAT course in NY.?

If you only need operations level, basically you just need to find any Firefighter 1 class being offered (mostly a volunteer dept. course.) as FF1 in NY now contains Hazmat Ops, and you could probably take just the hazmat part of the course as it's technically a separate class. Ask any volunteer...

    Volunteer Duty to Act?

This question is rather in depth, but I'll try to keep it as short and sweet as possible. Please don't refer me to the sticky, I read it in depth and couldn't find an answer. Background Info: I'm a volunteer Firefighter/EMT-B in New York State. My department functions as a BLS rescue squad...

Physician assistant as Medic in NYS

Don't mean to dig up an old thread, but I wanted to answer this question. To my knowledge the answer is no. A PA/RN cannot bridge over to AEMT-I/Medic in NY state. I'm a Basic (currently enrolled in AEMT-I) in the Big Lakes Region of NY. When my Intermediate class started last week, we had an RN...

How long did you go between getting your certs and landing a job?

Got certified as a Basic on March 15th, applied to a local EMS service (at a theme park) the same day as I got my certification, had an interview, and was hired withing 2 weeks. Now I'm waiting for the park to open in 3 weeks..

The role of EMS in the rescue assignment

So what? Ambulances should start stocking rescue equipment? Heck, why not just throw a pump, tank, and hand line on there too so one two man crew and pull up and handle it all. Okay, but for real... Let the medics take care of the PT. The FD can do the cutting, or whatever. Most volunteer...

    nys emt exam

I also took my Basic on March 15th in NY, however I took it at an on-site scoring facility so I could avoid the wait time. There is no way to get a temporary card without going to an on-site scoring facility to take the exam. You're just going to have to wait it out. Not to scare you, but an...

    Best EMS pants..?

Alright so I just got my Basic certification from NY on March 15th. I'm a new EMT, but not new to Emergency Services.. I've been a volunteer fireman for over a year now. Just got hired at a theme park that is 5 minutes from my house, and I'm really looking forward to gaining more hands on...

    Newbie EMT Needing Help

Central Kentucky? Unless you're in a city, there are likely volunteer fire departments with rescue squads near you... sure you wouldn't be working on a transporting rig (although around here many VFD's have their own BLS/ILS rigs) but it would be good experience for you. Every state has...

    The Official EMTLIFE Introduction Thread

I'm Destin, a 19 year old EMT-B student in NY. Taking my finals now, just passed the first 3 practicals stations, 3 more to go this week, and then I've got the written exam next week.. if all goes well I'll be certified as of 3-15-12. My short term goal is to volunteer as an EMT with my...

    Tourniquet Protocol?

EMT student in NY here, and this protocol was just changed for us before I started my class. It's now: Direct Pressure -> Direct Pressure again -> Pressure Bandage -> TK. Arterial Pressure points used to come before the TK but have since been removed from protocol in NY.
