My company just reached a new cheap low...

The community colleges around here do free con-ed for all the EMT/MEDIC/FIRE. Is that something you can look into? The online stuff is good but I know in my county we have to have so many hours of "in-county" training.

    Volunteer EMT in Upstate SC?

There are a MILLION private services in the upstate. Surely one of them must hire under 21. Do a google search. I wish we had half the amount of options as you guys do there. Best of luck!

    NREMT Basic Employment after failing!

In my state what grade/percentage you got on the state test follows you around for ever on the state data page. Anyone can look it up. It will also show how many times you took the state test to pass. So you may never know where your MD or Lawyer stood in their class but here you will also...

    controlling hours worked

9-5 Mon-Fri with a small IFT/911 backup company. We have a 24 hour truck too and they try like the ****ens to not let day shift get any overtime. It happens on occasion.... but doesn't really get in the way of life.

    communicable diseases

I had MRSA on my knee once. It hurt like a mother but w/ a round of sulfa drugs and lots of hot compresses it didn't take long to get rid of it. Like everyone else said. Stay healthy-- eat right, exercise and SLEEP! and you don't have much to worry about. Your body's immune system is an...

Does Your Department/Squad Provide Fitness Equipment?

Nope. And the Y here doesn't give discounts for EMS or fire. The fact that I make 11 dollars and hour 40 hours a week means I can't even qualify for financial aide at said Y..... We do have a basketball net but the new director of operations keeps hiding the ball and mumbling under his...

    IV or no IV?

This is a good discussion. We have been having the same one at my station. We are mostly transport but we back up the 9-11 county system when we are needed. The general consensus is to stick an IV in (almost) everyone on an EMS call. I was a phlebotomist for four years before starting with...

You can start IV's as a phlebotomist? Where I come from phlebotomists can do one thing and one thing only and that is draw blood.

Diabetics and fasting for blood work?

Yes I know they are both the same.... but what I was saying is that I still have seen that done. Before EMS I was a phlebotomist at a busy hospital for 4 years. And by before I mean like last year..... LOL. And they still had us doing GTTs and O'sullivans on the preggos.

You might work for a private if.....

Our director of operations took a 6 week EMT-B course (in Feb) and refuses to take county boards. And I can write a damn tight report for medicaid.... ;) Our owner is awesome and our trucks rock. And I work w/ some great folks many whom have been there 5-10 years.

Diabetics and fasting for blood work?

Diabetics fast at least 8 hours every night when they sleep just like the rest of us. On the day they are coming in the morning for any fasting bloodwork they do not take insulin until after the blood is drawn and they have eaten a meal. I still see glucose tolerance testing done and it is...

Anyone looking for an EMT-B job?

It says in the FAQs that women are not allowed to drive in saudi arabia and must wear an abaya. So I guess they don't hire women EMTs since we can't drive an ambulance......
