    Paramedic School

You would definitely want to call it something less scary! But I mean, it's in the Algebra 1 course on Khan Academy, like 8th grade math stuff. le sigh.

    Paramedic School

I always say med math is just dimensional analysis, and it's easy if you learn that, and then you can use the shortcuts later if you want. But nobody ever believes me.

I just love how perfectly OP's story matches the graph... He was on top of Mt. Stupid when taking the NREMT, then down into the valley of despair when he gave up... Now he's slowly climbing the slope of enlightenment!

Can I just vent for a sec?

You're nervous because you care and want to do a good job. I think a lot of people in EMS are more confident than they ought to be.

    The absolute begining.

I really like having a digital watch - I have a Timex Ironman. I use the lap timer/stopwatch every single day - keep track of how long CPR has been in progress, how long ago you gave a med, when you started the laundry, when you put the pizza in the oven, etc. When taking a pulse just make a...

    Inhalable Insulin???

Hadn't heard about this but it sounds interesting! Sounds like it's been tried before in the past and didn't have as much success as you'd think then, either: http://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/features/featureinhalable-insulin-a-losing-battle-4872250/

32 yr old mom, looking to bounce into the ems field.

Definitely not too old! Start working out ASAP if you haven't already - this can be a physically demanding job sometimes given our nation's expanding waistline. The more weight you can deadlift/squat, the less likely you are to get injured carrying someone down stairs or operating a stretcher...

    Popliteal Blood Pressure

You could also palpate the systolic via dorsalis pedis, theoretically, if you wanted to, and assuming the patient doesn't have PVD (which they almost certainly do, I guess, if they have no arms available for taking a pressure on...)!

    Popliteal Blood Pressure

I've never done it but I guess it's nice to know the option is available. You can also auscultate the posterior tibial artery if you put the cuff just above the ankle, but you are at risk of getting low numbers if the person has peripheral vascular disease...

Wow that's awesome, congrats! I always took mine on Fridays and had to wait the whole weekend for results :(

    PTSD and Paramedic Research

My heartrate jumps by 30bpm every time I hear a phone ring in public or a voice coming through an overhead like at the airport or in a store. Can I get an amen?

Questions from a high school student

I like that as a healthcare person, you are always "the good guy". People are usually happy to see you. Probably not the case as an LEO. You'll feel like you're doing good in your community to be sure... but the money is definitely worse in EMS unless you become a firefighter, or go into...

    Frustrated

My only concern would have been that it might look weird on your resume to work someplace for 6 months and then quit... But if you already have a job for when you get back, then I think the experience can only help you. I started in IFT. It's whatever. IFT and 911 are different animals but I...

Rialto Fire: 71% Neurologic Intact Cardiac Arrest Survival Rate?

I think this is more of a public health issue than anything else. When people get early compressions, they can do well. If they don't, odds are slim. Start requiring middle and high school students to take a CPR class on the first day of school every year and I bet the numbers start looking a...

    Falling O2 sats.....on CPAP?

What if it wasn't CHF or COPD? What were the lung sounds? BP and HR? ETCO2? CPAP is sweet but it definitely isn't the end-all be-all solution to anything. It's just something else to try before intubation...
