Taking EMT-B course without any other experience/courses?

The only kind of medical instruction I had before the EMT-B class was from boy scouts when I got my first aid merit badge. And that was about 5 years ago. We learned splinting of most limbs, a lot on environmental emergencies (snake bites, hypothermia/hyperthermia, etc.), and how to control...

Post the # your test stopped at, and if you Passed/Failed

I took it twice, the first stopped at 102 and the second stopped at 120. I heard it will pick a random amount of questions between 70 and 120

    Volunteering and employment

Well we do have what we call 'duty crew' where we have to answer calls from like 20:00-06:00. It is to be sure that we have a crew at night. If we aren't a paid squad we will still need another job. There are a few members that are retired or looking for a job at the moment that can suit our...

    Volunteering and employment

I don't know if they would have it by you, but a small suburban town would have an on-call basis. You are not required to have a shift. The only thing you'll have to do is make a certain number of calls to continue as a member of the squad. You'll get a pager at the least. They will surely allow...

What is your most ridiculous call?

We were on call at the station for my ride time so we had a pretty good response. We just ran with lights and turned on the siren at lighted intersection and didn't really go over speed limit. We were close enough that we got there in 5 minutes. I guess the driver was a bit too cautious.

What is your most ridiculous call?

When I was doing my ride time we got dispatched to some sort of clinic for chest pain. We arrived on scene and the patient ruptured her brachial artery from a skin graft she had. I guess the surgery caused the problem. We got to the scene and the doctor had already controlled the bleeding and...

101 Ways to Tell a Patient You Don't Need an Ambulance, Without Actually Saying so..

I haven't gotten anything that didn't really need a transport, yet. Anything that was pretty minor, like a few scrapes and stuff the patient was smart enough to know they didn't really need to go to the hospital. Even a guy on a bike stuck by a vehicle going 30-35 mph. Medics checked him out...

    EMT BUFF Test

I wonder if it is possible to have sex with someone while giving them CPR? I'm not going to try it, but you'd have to be some sort of god.

    EMT BUFF Test

36, I want to know if the following has actually happened to anyone? -------------------------- 143. Ever had sex on an ambulance? 144. During a call? 145. During a cardiac arrest? 146. While there was a patient on board? 147. With the patient? 148. With a cardiac arrest...

    Ammonia Inhalants...

I don't see much practical use to these. If someone has a serious injury and is unconscious, they are going to be much easier to handle unconscious. You can find out what happened from an assessment and scene size-up.

    Call in to the hospital

So far I haven't had a priority transport, but I was told if we did have one, we should tell them: MOI/NOI, what injuries they may have, what we are doing to treat them, and ETA

how long did it take before you could take the NREMT.

I was able to take the test about a week or two after my class. However, I was working for my father's company for two weeks which was a full day of labor. I came home tired everyday so I had no energy to study. Anyway, I had the greatest trouble trying to schedule the tests with a part time...

    EMT-B class-what to wear?

I guess I was lucky. There was no dress code at mine. We only had to dress for the Hospital and Ride time (obviously). I don't know if you learn better or not that way, but it was nice not having to wake up at 7 three days a week to put on boots, khakis/BDU, and stuff. I guess have it even...

L&S - Traffic Signal Preemption Systems

That's what I was thinking about too. What could help with that are those rumbler sirens too. If your town can afford these systems, they sure as hell can afford a sub-woofer for your siren. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVdUUyGrz2o It sounds funny, but it is very effective. It practically...

ER vs back of the ambulance

Nurses tell us how easy our job is, I always tell them they need to try it before the judge it. That is a great example.

    Immature EMTs

I forgot to elaborate on that. Yes, I am very serious about this profession while we have the patient, family, etc. in our company. I am usually working with another 19 year old EMT (who has 2 years of experience) we have our quips and stuff on the way back to headquarters about the call...

I'm a volunteer in two squads. Right now, I don't even fit in those statistics.

L&S - Traffic Signal Preemption Systems

This does seem like a good idea. It doesn't have to be on every intersection. Only the intersections that seem really busy, like in my trip to a particular hospital, I have to cross a highway with traffic lights. It is often pretty ridiculous to run lights and sirens through the red light...

    BP Sounds

I'd love to have a monitor, but a BLS unit with minimal funding doesn't see a need for one.

    "Raccoon Eyes"

I know the police in my town are pretty good at arresting drunk resistive patients. I've seen it done twice. Haha, you do have a good point though.
