Contra Costa County CA IFT or BLS Companies?

Thanks for the info, Aprz. Would it be all right for me to PM you with some questions about working for Pro-Transport? If not, its all gravy. Thanks again. :)

Contra Costa County CA IFT or BLS Companies?

Hey All~ My EMT class ends in two weeks (eep! ) and I am planning to take the NREMT in January. I am looking at a couple companies in Contra Costa County. (i.e. ProTransport, WestMed, Priority1, NORCAL, etc.) Does anyone have any experience with a BLS/IFT company in this area...

    Remove Motorcycle Helmet?

Here's my two cents. In my EMT-B class, we have been instructed to consider manual C-spine, and to do a DCAPBLSTIC check starting at the top of the head. I was in an MVA in 2009. I put my motorscooter into the back of a car. The EMTs on-scene did NOT remove my helmet. I had a 3/4 or...

    Who wears glasses or contacts?

I wear google-eyes (glasses) and I have for roughly 16 years (since High School). I had fleeting thoughts of contacts, but I just can't get over the touching my eyeballs part. *shudder* Thankfully, my vision is relatively good. Only mild astigmatism with my right eye being 20/20 and my left...

    Stethescopes and mild hearing loss

This is the stethescope I got: I can hear quite clearly when I tap on either side of the diaphragm. I can also hear my heart rate (and the cat's) quite clearly. We're supposed to be doing BP auscultation in class this week, so I'm sure the teacher will be addressing the issue.

    Stethescopes and mild hearing loss

Hello~ I am in my fourth week of an 18 week EMT-Basic class. I purchased a Littman stethescope for the class (mid-range, approx $56) and exicitedly tried it out by listening to my own (and my cat's, LoL :P) heart. I tried to listen to my own breath sounds, but I couldn't really hear anything...

    Getting (and staying) Fit

I looked up the website that JD9940 suggested. All of the exercises listed look safe enough, except the "Clean and Jerk." Isn't it a generally a no-no to "swing" the weights and/or jump whilst holding a weight bar? I always thought weight lifting should be done in a smooth, controlled motion...

    Ick factors

Actually, I gagged before I put my hands in. Mostly because almost everyone else was making faces. Once I got to the bowl, I had stopped gagging.

    Ick factors

Had my first hands-on/lab class today. We had to dip our gloved hands into bowls of "mystery goo" and then de-glove. I gagged a couple times. But I kept my dinner safely where it belonged! Gum will be my new best friend. One of my classmates mentioned that swallowing can help suppress the...

    Getting (and staying) Fit

I dunno what gurney it was. It was just heavier than I expected. For some strange reason, I expected the gurney to weigh, like 50 lbs. (Please don't ask why. I have NO IDEA why I thought that!) One gurney was an old one, and one was almost brand new. I think he new one was a...

    Getting (and staying) Fit

Had my first "hands-on" portion of my EMT class today and ... Wow! A lot heavier than I expected. And the stretcher/gurney was EMPTY.  Anyone have any suggestions as to TotalGym and/or weight-training exercises I can do to increase my strength? I *do* have a gym membership...

Yeah, grown-up diaper content is an Ick for me. I never did like the ... aroma I got when visiting my grandfather in the nursing home. Yuck!

    Ick factors

I haven't yet started classes nor been in the field, but my ick factors *outside* EMS are: vomiting, poop (though I do okay with baby diapers), meat baby food, and canned pet food. Blech!

Field Work requirements for EMT-B students?

Okay, I did some searching of the various forums and didn't find what exactly I was looking for. I will be starting an EMT-Basic class in August. I was wondering what (if any) "field work" I will be required to do during the course of my class? Will I need to do, like, ER rotations or run with...
