LA County changes worth watching in 2012

1- Another round of consolidation. See who gobbles up who.
2- New LA County Ordinance. Hopefully another tool to clean up the business.
3- OIG investigations. Wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of these.
4- New Kaiser contracts. Some winners, some losers. Either way, gonna be some some major bleeding that will hit the field level. Most likely the end of March into the beginning of April.
5- LA City rates. How long will this antiquated rate setting process last. If it changes (as it should) to the LA County rate structure, those successful Kaiser bidders are dead in the water.

Close to 100 providers at this date. Should be interesting to see who's still standing at the end of the year.

That wouldn't make any sense, other than to make CAAS a lot of money. I think there are more ambulance agencies in LA than there are CAAS accredited agencies total.

Then again, California EMS has never struck me as the most sensible thing.

Requiring accreditation of some kind has to start somewhere. Heck, if a hospital wants to bill Medicare, it has to be accredited by an agency such as the Joint Commission (formerly JACHO). The Joint Commission isn't the only source of hospital accreditation, but it's the largest.

What's the story with the OIG investigations? Can you provide a source for this information?

They've been investigating the LA market for quite some time. Check their website for reports, etc....

And so it begins. County of Los Angeles District Attorney issues "Cease and Desist" letter to 4 companies, 6 more drafts waiting to go out next week.

Orange County has jumped on the bandwagon as well. At least 1 company suspended last week.

Good job EMS Agencies and way overdue.

This happened in Texas in 2005 with operation Easy Rider. They shut down LOTS of services and most were of good size. Right now with Medicare cuts you are slowly seeing the other crappy ones disappear.

The county ordinance unlikely to do anything. Only thing it will really do is make it more costly. Truthfully it's similar to la with some extra stuff.
4) Kaiser is not the only place to get contract from/clients.
5) Do not see much changes to LA rates any time soon. At least not the way it's currently set up

On the other hand, Medicare being the name of an IFT company is...
