I have a few questions that I really hope some of you can answer. I recently got hired through a private ambulance company. For the hiring process I successfully passed all scenarios and did the interview with high regards and praise. I am starting orientation in a couple weeks, than after that proceeding to my internship. Here's my problem. About a 2 years ago I was "ticketed" for a DUI. I am truly fighting the case as of now, but I have NOT been convicted. My driving record is completely clean. No demerit points, no conviction, EXCEPT it shows that my license was revoked (for the DUI ticket) and than reinstated.

Now my question is: 1. Will the insurance company that insures ambulance drivers still insure me even though I have NOT been convicted. Like I said, as of now, on my driving record it ONLY shows a revoked license.

Like I said, the company wants to hire me, but the main concern is: How do the insurance companies decide whether an EMT is insurable. Is it convictions, demerits, etc. I actually have an attorney that is in the process of getting this whole case thrown out because of the circumstances (long story). So if anyone can please give me any or all the info regarding this it would be much appreciated. Thank you much for your time.

It all depends on the company and the insurance.

Why not ask what insurance the ambulance service uses, and give them a call?

Depends on the company.

Personal opinion though, if you were driving drunk they shouldn't let you drive. DUIs show really poor judgemenet and a disregard for other's safety. If you were sleeping it off with your radio and ac on, I'm sorry our stupid cops screwed you like that

It varies so much from company to company that it's tough to give you a definite answer.

At the company I work for, you are borderline, but probably hireable. Every company has a different insurance provider, and every insurance provider has different rules.

Might be worth noting that your age could also affect the outcome. If you're 25, you've got a better shot of clearing insurance than if you're 19.

I am 22 years old so I know that's gonna be another issue. I know this is a tough question, because employer wise they really like me and I am starting orientation, EVOC, and internship soon. And during orientation is when I give them my driving record. But as i am finding out it seems to be at the hands of the insurance company.

They hired you without getting a driving history report first?

Honestly, it should be grounds for revocation of your certification if you do it more than once or do it in an excessively egregious manner. Pilots can lose their licenses for repeated DUIs in non-aircraft vehicles, so why shouldn't we?

My service requires we have one point or less... Somehow I'm surprised I've kept a clean record.. Even despite being chased for 150+ on my sportbikes... Thank God for having a dad who's a cop with lots of friends...

If they've hired you and you have an orientation date set, don't say a word until it's been brought to you. Why give them a reason to fire you?

If they ask you about it be 100% honest.

Thanks for all your responses guys. Update on my case. I got a printout of my DMV driving record. So far it shows: No conviction, no demerits, and a revoked and than reinstated license. I talked with my attorney and I am NOT going to be charged with a DUI. I got it reduced to Reckless Driving. My conviciton date will be in 2012 so as of now nothing shows.

I am just worried that I am going to be starting orientation than I will have to show them my driving record and they will question the revoked license. I will definitely be honest and upfront and let them know it was for reckless driving NOT DUI. I am just hoping that I will be deemed insurable by the company. I believe I should be because I have no conviction of any sort... yet. I am really hoping that all of this will go well. I am afraid to bring it up because I am so far in the employment process. I did great on all my skills tests, written, scenarios, and did great on the interview. They already offered me the job. Its just during orientation is when they check driving records. Wish me luck...

This is not something I would brag about or share.

And you are admitting this because why? Speeds like that might warrant a reckless or felony endangerment charge.

Dare I say your Dad and his friends did a disservice to the Community by letting someone who broke the law get off easy because of your ties to the Department? I know my Dad would have had me charged to the fulliest extent, teach me a lesson. I hope he atleast gave you a spakin!
