So I paid 3000 for my EMT-I school and studied my tail off passing the state practicals and written exam, got my liscense and applied to half a dozen ambulance companies. The school that I went to has its own company and gave us the impression that we would be hired by them. I have over 200 clinical hours and ride for free 24 hours every other weekend just to get ALS experience. I'm in the back hooking up patients to cardiac monitors, starting ivs and doing everything that an EMT would do. They let me do everything.

The company told me about an opening for a driver only position that would have no patient contact but at least it would get me closer to ALS. I didnt really want it due to the lack pf patient care but it is better than my full time non medical job so I was going to take it. They told me that after 6 months I could move to a BLS or ALS truck.

Well, I printed my MVR and have no points on my record so I am cool there. I am all excited and tomorrow was set to give notice at work. Today the position fell through and is no longer available. I am back to square one riding for free.

What can I do more than I am to get an EMS job. Are there any certifications that I can get to increase my chances of getting something?

Here I am with a timetable because I want to go to paramedic school later in the year.

why are you riding for free? are you a second or a third?

if you are riding for free, as a second, than there is no real incentive for them to hire you, since you are already doing the job for free.

maybe you should be looking elsewhere?

good luck

Im a third rider.

broaden your search.

That you're getting experience is a good thing as long as it doesn't prevent you from looking around. The ambulance company DOES have a good thing. You ARE on their string so somehow you gotta get off it.

I would never do this job for free, I don't understand how/why people do it.

That said, I don't know what to tell you, except, maybe.. move? What state?

Are you required to have experience to enter P class?

I live in Georgia. I'm riding for free while I'm looking for a job to get experience before paramedic school. Here in Georgia the experience is recommended but not required. Should infer my acls or a 12 lead certification?

DO NOT RIDE FOR FREE!!!!!!!!! That is crazy..Like said earlier, why would they pay you, when your already doing it for free.

Well I don't want to lose my skills. I ride as a third rider learning things and getting patient contact until hopefully someone hires me. The truth is that I go back to a full time job that is not medically related at all. If it takes me a few months to get hired somewhere then I will be ready. I just want to be on a truck.

Don't let 'em push you down about riding for free. EMS skills are far too easily lost if they're not used. Just keep trying, and keep pushing.

I can't help but think this place is really taking advantage of you.

They led you on, they didn't deliver. Now you are working for free. They want you to drive, probably a wheelchair van or the like I am guessing, and they charged you for your education.

I would drop this place like a bag of bricks.

Really?

What skills are those? Putting somebody on high flow o2, a spine board, or minimal assessment?

They don't call me to ride. I spend every other weekend emailing the director of operations asking if I can jump on a truck for a few hours. I am seeking them out. I paid to go to the best school here in Georgia hoping to go to work for them. Technically I am using them. I'm on an ALS truck and not a BLS truck. I wouldn't ride for free on a BLS truck. And you would be surprised what you can learn from a seasoned emt or paramedic. I just wish there was an opening there or for any company for that matter. I just want to know what I should do more then I am to get an ema job. Acls certification? Pals? Would anything help my chances with an ems company? My other classmates have fifty or so hours and ate not riding at all now. I Have almost 200 and have a full time job. That's how much I want to do this.

It doesn't sound like there's much more you can do. I realize you really want to work at this particular company, but if there are opportunities at another company in your area, you would probably be better off to look there.

Sometimes you gotta start off with what you can get.

Around here ACLS and PALS are standard requirements for ALS employment. I would spend a weekend collecting those merit badges instead of playing on the ambulance.
