http://avestacorp.com Is their website.

Is this like something that ems companies use to help with hiring or what? I looked over their site but didn't find much. I ask because I applied for a job at an ambulance company in my area. The next day I got an email asking to set up a phone interview and the email had the employees name and where he worked which said "avesta system inc." so I looked it up and checked out their website, and now I know why they want a phone interview because they're in a different state. Then I got a call from the ambulance company asking if I wanted to come in for an interview, I told them I already received an email, and the lady seemed confused but told me to proceed with the phone interview. Not sure which is better to get interviewed by....

Looks like the ambulance company outsourced their hiring and its relativity new for them. When you do the phone interview you could always ask them about it. I've not heard of the company, but it doesn't surprise me that someone is trying to fill a niche market.

I never heard of it either, that's why I was curious as to who they were. It seems odd to me that they're going to have another company interview me for them? I don't know how they would determine if the person is right for that company or not. The interview is scheduled for tomorrow so I guess I'll find out.

Staffing firms doing hiring is a fairly common practice in other industries. The company provides the staffing company with interview questions as well as other metrics that they want an individual assessed on, and the staffing report generally provides a report to the company, leaving it up to them to hire the actual employee.

Ahh, ok that makes more sense. Wouldn't a face to face interview be better to see how a person presents themselves, acts, etc. I'd think? But I'm sure if I "qualify" over the phone, they'll send me into the actual company itself, correct? I don't see how can they hire blindly over the phone, but I've never had a phone interview so I guess I'll see how this goes.

It could be a way to screen applicants prior to doing an in person interview. One company I applied to did that.

Well that whole "phone interview" went absolutely horrible. I'm not going to be getting that job, good thing I'll have a second chance Friday at a real face to face interview. I sounded like a total moron on the phone and blew it. I've had TWO jobs my whole life and I was being asked questions like "Describe a time you went above and beyond to provide excellent patient care or customer service" well, I never have cause my job I don't deal with customers and I've never had a Heath care job, so I don't know how to answer that. Now I'm just discouraged.

You've going to have to dig deep as that is a very common interview question and it's somewhat important that you demonstrate some sort of customer service prowess as that it primarily what EMS is.

What is it that you do now? Is there really no time when you haven't interacted with anyone besides coworkers?

I've been working construction. So I rarely see the "customers" or have to speak to them, that's not my job. So like I said, I don't know how to answer that. And the only time I've been around patients was on clinicals. Luckily that wasn't the company I REALLY wanted to work for, I actually never even heard of them until I seen their online ad and seen they were in the area so I applied. The company I really want to work for is the one I have an interview with on Friday, but now I feel like I'm going to mess that one up too. I understand why they ask those types of questions but I'm not good at coming up with a good answer right on the spot, I usually end up sounding like an idiot. I'd be more comfortable getting questions like "What would you do in this situation blah blah blah" instead of the "When HAVE YOU... Blah blah" questions.

No one is good at coming up with answers on the spot. Successful interviewers prepare ahead of time, and have answers for expected questions. You can be almost assured that the interviewer will ask you about times you "went above and beyond," "faced and overcame a challenge in the workplace," or "dealt with an unpleasant coworker." Have answers that highlight how awesome you are prepared ahead of time. There are LOTS of interview help websites that can give you more common questions.

Make sure you know something about the company too. What services do they provide and where? About how many units do they deploy? Do they have special programs as well? Employers will always be pleased if you've taken the time to research them. "Tell us what you know about XYZ ambulance service." should be a gimme question.

And most importantly, you need to be able to clearly explain why the company should hire you and not someone else? What sets you apart and makes you better than sliced bread?

If you google "common interview questions" you can prep for the questions that you'll certainly be asked.

Thanks. I'll make sure I get more prepared this time. Just honestly every time I get asked those types of questions my mind just goes blank and I have no idea what to say. I've never "went above and beyond" for a customer.. Or overcame some type of challenge. You know what I mean? I guess I'll have to come up with answers before hand. I can answer the "what do you know about your company, why do you want to work for us" those types of questions, but the "describe a time...." I hate.

I'll definitely check out some sites. I don't want to blow this one. I've heard they're a good ambulance company in the area and that's why I applied. I'm actually surprised I got a call back the next day. The phone interview one I knew nothing about, never heard of, just applied because I seen the ad there honestly. So I didn't take it seriously enough, didn't prepare at all and I know for sure they're not calling me back.

BS. Part of working is overcoming challenges and doing more than asked, that's how you remain employed.

Ok, well there's not anything I can pick out off the top of head and describe that situation when I did that. But like you said I need to be prepared, so that I will be.

Well, I wasn't even asked any "describe a time.." Questions that I was worried about. Just basic interview questions that I felt a lot more prepared for. (Why us, what do you know about us, your future.. Etc.)

Future reference for interviews. When have you gone above and beyond, what's a challenge you've had to overcome. You're answers don't always have to be based on work experience. You can have answers for those questions from your personal life also. Be it in school, sports, or any other aspect of your life you've been that shining star or excelled through a difficult challenge.

Thanks, I got offered a full time position with them this morning, so I hope I don't have to do any interviews anytime soon.
